Utah Signs Law Allowing Prisoners To Shoot When No Lethal Injections

The project was presented by Paul Ray, who says the squad is the most humane form of execution.

Utah became the first state to allow a firing squad if the lethal drugs are not available.

The Utah Gov. Gary Herbert signed a bill that makes use of firing squads for executions, if drugs for lethal injections are not available legal.

STUDY: U.S. "WAR ON TERROR" HAS LEFT OVER 1 MILLION DEAD IN IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, PAKISTAN

The U.S.-led Multinational Force (MNA) in Iraq, the NATO International Securi-ty Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and the U.S. Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF-A), also in Afghanistan, have carefully kept a running total of fatalities they have suffered. However, the military’s only interest has been in counting “their” bodies: 4,804 MNA soldiers have died in Iraq between March 2003 and February 2012, the date when the U.S. body counting stopped. As of early June 2013, 3,323 ISAF and OEF soldiers have lost their lives in Afghanistan since 2001.

Justice denied bail because of the risk of leakage.

Authorities investigating an unsolved case of several decades in the state of Vermont confirmed that there is a connection between millionaire Robert Durst and the disappearance in 1971 of Lynne Schulze, a student at Middlebury College.

"We are aware of the connection between the disappearance of Lynne Schulze and Robert Durst," he told CNN Captain Thomas Hanley, the Middlebury Police Department. "We have been aware of this connection for several years and have been working with various external agencies as we follow this track".

TUNISIAN TERROR ATTACK SUSPECTS TRAINED IN U.S. “LIBERATED” LIBYA

Libya has turned into a complete and total disaster zone/terrorist training camp ever since America and its allies decided to liberate it. While certainly not perfect under Qaddafi, it was an infinitely better place before NATO intervention than after. Not only that, but the entire justification for the “freedom” delivered to it by Western powers was, naturally, based on lies and propaganda. I covered this last month in the post, The Forgotten War – Understanding the Incredible Debacle Left Behind by NATO in Libya.

Zimmerman Blames Obama For Racial Tension After The Death Of Trayvon Martin

The found not guilty of murdering man Trayvon Martin said President treated him unfairly.
George Zimmerman said that a person in his situation can not feel guilty about surviving a confrontation like the one he had with Trayvon Martin, the 17 year old who shot and killed three years ago in Florida. He also criticized the reaction of President Barack Obama regarding this case.

Zimmerman said he would be guilty only if he thought he could have done something differently that would have saved the lives of both.

Is Netanyahu Behind the Massacre in Tunis?

Is Israeli intelligence behind the massacre in Tunis? Ask yourself, why would Tunisians commit such a monstrous atrocity that harms no one - but Tunisia? Cui bono?

The senseless terrorist attack on innocent civilians at the Bardo Museum in Tunis, in fact, bolstered no one except Benjamin Netanyahu, whose duplicity had been utterly exposed the day before the attack - when he was re-elected to head the Zionist state that occupies Palestine.

No group had even claimed responsibility for the murderous attack on tourists visiting the Bardo National Museum in Tunis until the Israeli website, SITE Intelligence Group, "interpreted" the terrorist attack for the Western media - and blamed Islamic State - the following day.

The Israeli interpretation, from Mossad's SITE, of the attack in Tunis could have come straight out of one of Netanyahu's books from the 1980s about "Fighting Terrorism."

Right lessons to be drawn from the past on Yugoslavia bombing anniversary — Russian ForMin

It is critically important to abandon the practice of double standards, unilateral and selective interpretation of international law, Russian Foreign Ministry says.
On March 24, 1999, NATO launched a war against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, beginning a barbaric bombing campaign. This act of aggression crudely violated the UN Charter, the provisions of the Helsinki Final Act, universally recognized norms of international law and the UN Security Council resolution on the Kosovo settlement.

The Debate: Bush and Blair War Crimes: Ken O'Keefe

In March 2003, the US and its allies invaded Iraq under the pretext of annihilating weapons of mass destruction Saddam Hussein had in his arsenals. George W. Bush and Tony Blair, the leaders of the US and Britain, spearheaded the invasion that removed Saddam, the former Iraqi dictator, from power, yet left the country in ruins and claimed more than a million Iraqi lives. In this edition of the Debate, we ask Ken O'Keefe, a peace activist and former US Marine from London, and Lee Kaplan, an investigative journalist from San Francisco to answer when those responsible for the war crimes will be held accountable.

For Hamza: Arms Sanctions against Israel’s Everyday Terrorism

To boost Israeli arms sales, Palestinian families have suffered three onslaughts of ‘systematic genocide’ wars in 6 years and are condemned to a life that is unnatural, stressful, traumatic waiting for the next Israeli weapons testing that will again turn Gaza into ground zero*……

Israel’s “Every Day Terrorism”, Crimes against Palestinian Children. For Hamza: Arms Sanctions Against Israel

Look carefully, look tenderly, don’t turn away. Please don’t turn away as all the nations of the world have, for decades, turned away from Palestine.

Hamza is Palestine.

Look carefully at Israel’s savage violation to his once perfect little body when on the 25th July 2014, Israel’s soldiers loaded and fired pale blue artillery shells that discharged white incendiary rain on Gaza in hundreds of phosphorous-impregnated felt wedges as Hamza and his family slept.

Imagine the agony Hamza suffered from the moment the white phosphorous struck and burrowed through his soft three year old skin. Phosphorous burns are only contained by blocking off oxygen but the extreme pain and, as you can see, the horrific tissue damage endures.

Hamza’s father and two siblings were also burnt but luckily their injuries were less severe. Imagine the wounded family’s terrifying walk through the night to the nearest hospital.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As someone who loves children, looking at this image is very painful for me.

But even more painful is the clear realization that the Israeli government's attitude that this child doesn't matter; that he is just a statistic, collateral damage, if you will, and not to be given a second's thought.

The members of the IDF who ran this operation are probably cursing to themselves that they didn't finish the family off, outright.

And there's the problem.

The nation of Israel, in the 21st century, has become a singularly dystopian country; a xenophobically apartheid, self-proclaimed theocracy with nuclear weapons.

Unfortunately, the US government has enabled this behaviour by doling out money and weapons (all of which are completely illegal, under the Symington Act)to a country where its leadership believes that there is no moral or spiritual parity, or equivalent, between the lives of Palestinians, and the lives of Israelis.

This would be a terrible failing for even one individual to believe this way; but when your entire nation believes this, it is a recipe for an absolute catastrophe.

US News Website Accuses Google of Censorship over Photos of Abu Ghraib, Dead Ukrainians

Non-interventionist news portal Antiwar.com has accused Google of using “authoritarian” tactics and being “an arm of the US State Dept.,” after it stopped providing adverts on several of its stories, which the tech giant says violate its policy.

The conflict erupted last Sunday, when the tech giant notified the website that its advertising service AdSense would be disabled, due to depictions of “violence” and “gore” next to its ads, in what Antiwar.com said was a “big hit” to its funding. As an example of the violations it listed a 2006 article containing photos of torture from Abu Ghraib Prison in Iraq – which Antiwar.com says has been viewed over 2 million times – and urged the administrators to “check all other remaining sites in your account for compliance.”

Israel shuns UN rights session on Gaza onslaught

Israel has inexplicably shunned a UN Human Rights Council’s special session on the grim situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, and the Israeli military’s devastating offensive against the besieged Gaza Strip last summer.

A source close to the council said on condition of anonymity that Israel's absence from the meeting in the Swiss city of Geneva on Monday clearly amounted to a boycott.

"We won't comment on that," a spokeswoman with the Israeli mission said. The United States also did not take part in Monday's discussions.

Sept. 11 Museum honored at Disneyland, angering vics' kin

The 9/11 Museum was feted in a lavish gala thrown by an attraction association at Disneyland — a slight victims’ families said was another sign the nonprofit is more focused on money than the memory of their loved ones.

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum was honored with the Themed Entertainment Association’s “Extraordinary Cultural Achievement” award at the Anaheim, Calif., event.

“It’s totally outrageous that they would participate in this,” Jim Riches, a retired firefighter who lost his son, Firefighter Jimmy Riches, on Sept. 11, told the Daily News. “It’s a moneymaking place for entertainment and they got an award for it. They’ve made it into an amusement park.”

Why Do American Weapons End Up in Our Enemies’ Hands?

It happens so often you wonder whether it is due to total ineptness or a deliberate policy to undermine our efforts overseas. It’s most likely a result of corruption and unintended consequences, combined with a foreign policy that makes it impossible to determine who are our friends are and who are our enemies. One would think that so many failures in arming others to do our bidding in our effort to control an empire would awaken our leaders and the American people and prompt policy changes.

A Family Business of Perpetual War

Neoconservative pundit Robert Kagan and his wife, Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, run a remarkable family business: she has sparked a hot war in Ukraine and helped launch Cold War II with Russia – and he steps in to demand that Congress jack up military spending so America can meet these new security threats. This extraordinary husband-and-wife duo makes quite a one-two punch for the Military-Industrial Complex, an inside-outside team that creates the need for more military spending, applies political pressure to ensure higher appropriations, and watches as thankful weapons manufacturers lavish grants on like-minded hawkish Washington think tanks.

Judge orders release of detainee abuse photos

A federal judge has ordered the release of about 2,000 photos depicting the abuse of prisoners in U.S. military custody—images that President Barack Obama declared years ago should be kept from public view.

New York-based U.S. District Court Judge Alvin Hellerstein said he told government lawyers last month that he viewed a certification then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta signed in 2012 as not legally adequate to withhold the photos. The judge called the finding "deficient because it was not sufficiently individualized and it did not establish the Secretary's own basis for concluding that disclosure would endanger Americans."

UN officials accused of bowing to Israeli pressure over children's rights list

Senior UN officials in Jerusalem have been accused of caving in to Israeli pressure to abandon moves to include the state’s armed forces on a UN list of serious violators of children’s rights.

UN officials backed away from recommending that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) be included on the list following telephone calls from senior Israeli officials. The Israelis allegedly warned of serious consequences if a meeting of UN agencies and NGOs based in Jerusalem to ratify the recommendation went ahead. Within hours, the meeting was cancelled.

America’s Dead-End in the Middle East

When empires weaken, they don’t merely withdraw. Rather, they leave behind a trail of broken promises and confusion.

When columnist Thomas L. Friedman suggests the U.S. should arm ISIS – thus joining the Saudi-Israeli regional war on Iran and the Shiites – it seems time to question the sanity of U.S. opinion- and policy-makers. But that is where the muddled U.S. post-9/11 strategy has led, explains Daniel Lazare.

Netanyahu’s Victory: Now What President Obama?

Netanyahu's outright rejection of a Palestinian state and his promise to go on building more and more illegal settlements leave Obama without any wriggle room.

“Love him (Netanyahu) or hate him, this is the face of Israel.” That’s how Uriel Heilman concluded an article for the JTA (Jewish Telegraph Agency) on Netanyahu’s election victory after noting that he had shown his true colours by declaring that there would be no Palestinian state while he is in charge. What President Obama now has to decide is whether or not he will allow Netanyahu to remain in charge of American policy for Israel-Palestine.

Netanyahu Unmasks Israel

With the facades gone, Americans must decide if they will embrace this apartheid system or not...

Desperate to win reelection, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stripped off Israel’s mask and exposed the ugliness that has deformed his country over the past several decades. He abandoned the subterfuge of a two-state solution, exposed the crass racism that underlies Israeli politics, and revealed Israel’s blatant control of the U.S. Congress.

For years, U.S. politicians have rejected allegations of Israeli racism and excused mistreatment of the Palestinians as a temporary necessity that would be fixed by a two-state solution. But Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has destroyed those arguments in his panic to keep his job, reports Robert Parry.

Pentagon denies UN investigator chance to interview Guantánamo detainees

Shortly after the Pentagon took a battery of pro-Guantánamo US senators for a tour of its infamous detention center, it confirmed that it will deny the United Nations’ torture investigator interviews with Guantánamo Bay detainees.

Juan Méndez, the UN’s special rapporteur on preventing torture, “has been invited to visit Guantánamo; however, he will not be permitted to interview detainees”,Army Lieutenant Colonel Myles Caggins, the Pentagon’s detentions spokesman, told the Guardian.

Méndez told reporters in Geneva last week that he had spurned what he considered hollow offers by the US to visit Guantánamo, citing unacceptable restrictions on his ability to examine the facility for himself.

“I am not allowed to have any unmonitored or even monitored conversations with any inmate in Guantánamo Bay,” Méndez said, according to AFP.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF everything was "above-board" at Gitmo, there would be no problem with Mendez having the ability to interview these prisoners of war.

So you have to ask yourselves; what is the Pentagon brass terrified that this guy is going to find here, and how much worse a picture of US "human rights" adherence in this prison will such an inspection demonstrate?!?

Is there concern that some of these men, who have been cleared of any wrongdoing, will never be released, because their bodies wear the scars of torture, trying to get them to confess to a narrative which never actually happened?!?

And as to the naso-gastric tube feedings; even in the hands of the most astute and compassionate medical practitioner, this can be a rough experience for the patient.

But in the hands of someone who wanted to use it as punishment?!?!? The pain can be extraordinary, with absolutely no relief, and the side effects can be devastating.

And if these guys were not radicalized when they were incarcerated at Guantanamo, they certainly are now, from the treatment they have received.

“There are places throughout the world where CIA has worked with other intelligence services and has been able to bring people into custody and engage in the debriefings of these individuals…through our liaison partners, and sometimes there are joint debriefings that take place as well,” said John Brennan, the CIA director, speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

Brennan’s remarks confirm what journalists have long reported: that the Obama administration sometimes helps other countries do the dirty work of snatching and interrogating terror suspects–keeping the U.S. at arm’s length from operations that are ethically and legally dubious.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"....ethically and legally dubious.." ?!?!?!?

HOW ABOUT FLIPPING MORALLY ABHORRENT?!?

And folks, whenever the US tortures, or outsources torture, the following things happen:

1. The world understands that all of those values this country allegedly hold dear (human rights, the right to due process, and even the right to life) mean absoflippinglutely NOTHING to those in power.

2. When the US tortures, or outsources torture, it gives other governments which don't like us much carte blanche to torture American civilians and military personnel.

Those of you with friends or family serving, please chew on that last one for a while.

Authorities Are Still Several Clues To The Perpetrators Of Police In Ferguson

The police chief of St. Louis County, Jon Belmar, gave a press conference.
The investigation into who shot two policemen during a protest in Ferguson remains an open question, given the large number of testimonies and various tracks on aggression.

This Friday, the police chief of St. Louis County, Jon Belmar, revealed that despite dozens of stories that have received so far there have been no direct witnesses of the shooting.

“There have been several tracks since then, I cannot say at this point that an arrest is imminent, no one is in custody,” said Belmar.

Christopher Bollyn 2015 “Solving 911 Ends the War”

In the name of 9/11, “wars have been waged, governments overthrown, and an untold number of lives sacrificed.” Yet 9/11 is an unsolved crime of terrorism and mass murder, with no trial and no serious investigation. This elaborately planned criminal deception was carried out “with the intention that the public would be deceived with a false explanation blaming the atrocity on Osama Bin Laden and Al Quaida....”

Christopher Bollyn states he has written “Solving 9-11: the Deception that Changed the World” because he could not remain indifferent and silent...”as the lies about 9/11 were used to wage wars of aggression and transform American into a police state.”

A member of the late Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s brutal secret police who’s been accused of murder taught for more than a decade at the Pentagon’s premier university, despite repeated complaints by his colleagues about his past.

Jaime Garcia Covarrubias is charged in criminal court in Santiago with being the mastermind in the execution-style slayings of seven people in 1973, according to court documents. McClatchy also interviewed an accuser who identified Garcia Covarrubias as the person who sexually tortured him.

Despite knowing of the allegations, State and Defense department officials allowed Garcia Covarrubias to retain his visa and continue working at a school affiliated with the National Defense University until last year .

There’s Only One Way to Stop a Murderous Government

I’m sure by now, most of you have heard of the infamous Milgram experiment that was conducted in the early 60’s. I’ll save you the details since, if you’re like me, you’ve probably read about it a dozen times or more already. It’s one of most popular experiments to cite, because it says so much about the nature of evil, and the darkest potential of the human spirit; and anyone who understands the dangers posed by government power, could probably describe the experiment from memory.

In short, Milgram provided an answer to the most tragic question in human history. How do so many good people wind up doing horrific things to their fellow-man? How is it that when the Nazis had to answer for their crimes, all they could say for themselves was “I was just following orders.”

7 Ways the Matrix Coerces Public Consent for Torture

Cleverly at work for the dark side, the corporate media isn’t going into great detail about the recent discovery that the Chicago Police Department has for years been operating a secret, off-site, extra-judicial, unconstitutional detention and interrogation center in a nondescript warehouse on the West side of the Windy City. Americans, so the talking heads would have us believe, have more important things to busy ourselves with.

The protest against this outrage is growing, however because at Homan Square, as it’s known, the local police ‘disappear’ American citizens before charging them with any crime. They hide them there for hours or days without the knowledge of lawyers, family, or friends, interrogating, threatening, abusing and at times coming up with cleverly inhumane ways to torture them.

I was “part of a terror organization,” says Israeli pilot turned activist

In July 2002, Salah Shehadeh, head of the armed branch of Hamas in Gaza, was bombed in the middle of the night with an F-16 dropping a one-ton bomb on his house where he was sleeping with his children and his wife. The bomb killed fifteen people, most of them children, and about 150 were injured. If I needed some answer for my questions and doubts, that was clear: this is a terror attack. And I’m part of a terror organization.

IDF prepares for possibility of multi-pronged terror attack coming from Sinai

"The scenario that we are preparing for is a multi-pronged terror threat directed against our forces and civilians in the Eilat area,"
***
"In the past, we have seen incidents in this area. The scenario is a multi-pronged attack, not just at one site, and we will likely have to deal with this challenge without prior warning."
***
"our mission as a division is to ensure a feeling of security and routine in the area. Whether it is in Eilat or Nitzana. The operational challenges are very complicated, because on the one hand you have here a peaceful border, and on the other hand a frontier area in Sinai has developed that enables terrorist groups to grow like Ansar Bayit al-Maqdis which became an ISIS affiliate. This organization, as we have seen recently, creates a number of terror attacks against the Egyptian army, and this is one of the more bothersome challenges which we are preparing for."

Removing Israel from American politics

It is certainly past time to push back against an organization that is brazenly promoting the interests of a foreign government at the expense of the American people.

So, did Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland mislead Congress or just play a propaganda game, asks Robert Parry.

An early skill learned by Official Washington’s neoconservatives, when they were cutting their teeth inside the U.S. government in the 1980s, was how to frame their arguments in the most propagandistic way, so anyone who dared to disagree with any aspect of the presentation seemed unpatriotic or crazy.

During my years at The Associated Press and Newsweek, I dealt with a number of now prominent neocons who were just starting out and mastering these techniques at the knee of top CIA psychological warfare specialist Walter Raymond Jr., who had been transferred to President Ronald Reagan’s National Security Council staff where Raymond oversaw inter-agency task forces that pushed Reagan’s hard-line agenda in Central America and elsewhere.

The Power of Israel over the United States

There is much idle chatter from liberals, leftists and progressives, claiming that Netanyahu’s ‘brazen intervention’would backfire;

There have been times when history has played tricks with man and…has magnified the features of essentially small persons into a parody of greatness--Rabindranath Tagore(on Benito Mussolini)

How is it that the ruler (Benjamin Netanyahu) of a puny country (Israel) of 8.2 million (6.2 million Jews) with the 37th biggest economy (GDP in current prices) in the world dictates war policy and secures the willing submission of the legislature of the largest economy and most powerful military empire in the world?

What significance does Netanyahu’s speech to the US Congress have, beyond the fact that he uses it as a platform to attack the elected President of the US, to denounce US peace negotiations and to demand that Congress adopt policies designed to precipitate a war with Iran?

The Guardian’s Homan Square story was huge on the internet—but not in Chicago media

On Election Day just over a week ago, as this city’s reporters and editors focused on whether the incumbent mayor with ties to the White House would win big or be forced into a historic run-off, an out-of-town newspaper produced a startling account of alleged abuse at a police facility called Homan Square.

The blockbuster story, published in The Guardian and written by Brooklyn-based journalist Spencer Ackerman, described the warehouse as the “domestic equivalent of a CIA black site,” where secretive police units operate and detainees are “disappeared,” with no access to lawyers or relatives and no immediate record of their whereabouts.

With its comparisons to war-on-terror practices and allegations of police brutality, the story landed big on the internet, with well more than 100,000 social shares and write-ups across the Web. The one place it didn’t get much traction: Chicago media.

In one month Chicago elects a mayor. These are ‘Black Sites’ where the cops are allowed to take people they kidnapped, to hold them without charges and to torture them until they confess to felonies that involve serious jail time.

The Corporate Media has ignored this story. The local news outlets in Chicago have sent reporters to the Police Department who asked the cops if they were kidnapping people off the street and torturing them. The Police said No. So that was the end of their investigations.

Top Afghan officials have presided over murders, abduction, and other abuses with the tacit backing of their government and its western allies, Human Rights Watch says in a new report.

A grim account of deaths, robbery, rapes and extrajudicial killings, Today We Shall All Die, details a culture of impunity that the rights group says flourished after the fall of the Taliban, driven by the desire for immediate control of security at almost any price.

“The rise of abusive political and criminal networks was not inevitable,” the report said. “Short-term concerns for maintaining a bulwark against the Taliban have undermined aspirations for long-term good governance and respect for human rights in Afghanistan.”

Congress granted the president the authority to arrest and hold individuals accused of terrorism without due process under the NDAA, but Mr. Obama said in an accompanying signing statement that he will not abuse these privileges to keep American citizens imprisoned indefinitely. These assurances, however, were not enough to keep a group of journalists and human rights activists from filing a federal lawsuit last year, which contested the constitutionality of Section 1021, the particular provision that provides for such broad power.

What Christians Don’t Know About Israel

In the late 1970s, when I first went to Jerusalem, I was unaware that editors could and would classify "news" depending on who was doing what to whom. On my initial visit to Israel-Palestine, I had interviewed dozens of young Palestinian men. About one in four related stories of torture.

Israeli police had come in the night, dragged them from their beds and placed hoods over their heads. Then in jails the Israelis had kept them in isolation, besieged them with loud, incessant noises, hung them upside down and had sadistically mutilated their genitals. I had not read such stories in the U.S. media. Wasn't it news? Obviously, I naively thought, U.S. editors simply didn't know it was happening.

'I sat in that place for three days, man': Chicagoans detail abusive confinement inside police 'black site'

A Chicago man says he was confined for three days – shackled, interrogated and fed only twice, his whereabouts unknown – inside the police “black site” at the epicentre of public outcry over allegations of abuse said to focus on minority citizens.

Four black Chicagoans have now come forward to the Guardian detailing off-the-books ordeals at the facility, including another who describes being detained in “a big cage” with his wrists cuffed to a bench so he couldn’t move.

MI6 complicity? Lee Rigby killer’s torture claims investigated, says Cameron

A new inquiry will be conducted into claims that MI6 were complicit in the alleged torture of Michael Adebolajo, one of the two men later convicted of murdering British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich in May 2013.

The investigation will focus on how the British spy agency handled claims Adebolajo was beaten by Kenya’s security forces, who have close ties with the UK, while detained there in 2010.

Prime Minister David Cameron ordered the inquiry after a report by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) criticized MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service.

The committee’s report found MI6 never asked the Kenyan authorities about Adebolajo’s claims, dismissing them as fabricated.

Nation Reacts as Chicago Police’s Secret Prison Confirms Fears Over NDAA

The most important part about this revelation may be the likelihood of there being several more locations like this all across America where police can secretly detain, disappear, and kill people illegally or legally under the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

This could be the first instance of the NDAA being put to use; the first time authorities exercise their power to detain or kill anyone they want legally. Or maybe we just haven’t heard about this program because it’s been a closely guarded secret for a long time. There is a possibility that this secret detention center’s practices predate the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA, which was signed into law on New Years Day in 2012. This would mean the program was operating entirely outside of what is considered to be the law. Not exactly surprising.

A giant art installation targets predator drone operators

In military slang, Predator drone operators often refer to kills as ‘bug splats’, since viewing the body through a grainy video image gives the sense of an insect being crushed.

To challenge this insensitivity as well as raise awareness of civilian casualties, an artist collective installed a massive portrait facing up in the heavily bombed Khyber Pukhtoonkhwa region of Pakistan, where drone attacks regularly occur. Now, when viewed by a drone camera, what an operator sees on his screen is not an anonymous dot on the landscape, but an innocent child victim’s face.

Shackling for prolonged periods.

European Court confirms Polish complicity in CIA rendition and torture

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has today confirmed its judgement that Poland actively assisted the CIA’s European “black site” programme, which saw detainees held and tortured in secret prisons across the Continent.

In July 2014, the ECHR had ruled that Poland “facilitated” the torture, secret detention and unlawful transfer of Abu Zubaydah, who is now held in Guantanamo Bay.

Mr Zubaydah was flown from a secret site in Thailand to another CIA prison in Stare Kiejkuty in northern Poland, where he was detained and tortured during 2002 and 2003. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) detailed in its recent report how Mr Zubaydah was subjected to torture numerous times by the CIA, before the Agency concluded that he was not a member of al Qaeda at all.

Tom Cotton: U.S. Should Be 'Proud' Of How It Treats Guantanamo Detainees

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) on Monday said the U.S. should be "proud" of how it treats the "savages" it detains at the Guantanamo Bay military prison.

"Terrorists need no excuse to attack us here. They've shown that for decades and decades," Cotton said on Fox News' "The Kelly File." "We should be proud for the way we treated these savages at Guantanamo Bay and the way our soldiers conduct themselves all around the world to include the people doing the very hard work at Guantanamo Bay."

Last year, a lawyer for one Guantanamo detainee said that videos of his client being force-fed were so disturbing that he had trouble sleeping after viewing them. Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called for the closure of the facility last month, saying that it had created a "psychological scar." A 2009 report by Amnesty International said detainees were subjected to incredibly harsh conditions, including sleep deprivation and force-feeding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I am having a palm to forehead moment, at velocity, upon reading this.

And I would share the following observation with Senator Cotton. Many of these men have been convicted of no crime whatsoever; but, as you well know, many of them have been tortured.

And here is the problem, Senator Cotton: there are many at Gitmo who the US government will never release, because the marks of torture on their bodies bears incontrovertible witness to the reality that they were tortured.

And many times, they were tortured by Americans, to get them to confess to specific accusations in order to get US citizens to become more emotionally "comfortable" with the government narrative on specific issues, many of which had absolutely no relationship with reality.

And when the US tortures, or outsources torture, the following things happen, sir.

First, the world understands that those values of humanity, decency, the rule of law, and due process, which this country's leadership allegedly holds dear, are only practiced in the breach by the leaders of this country.

And secondly, when the US tortures, or outsources torture, it gives carte blanche for any foreign government, which doesn't like the US very much, to do the same to our military and civilian personnel.

Sir, I would deeply appreciate it if you could actually think about these points for a little while, before ingesting one more drop of the official koolaid on this issue.

Alleged plot deputy Ramzi bin al Shibh, 42, made the revelation just moments into the hearing by informing the judge he had a problem with his courtroom translator. The interpreter, Bin al Shibh claimed, worked for the CIA during his 2002 through 2006 detention at a so-called “Black Site.”

Did the United States Department of Justice Just Lie to the U.N.?First appeared: http://journal-neo.org/2015/02/06/did-the-united-states-department-of-justice-just-lie-to-the-u-n/

For Americans, confidence in government is at a low. Growing numbers of people now question nearly any declaration made by the US government, particularly when its assertions are either

1) addressing terrorism or

2) addressing domestic policies.

Recent statements by David Bitkower, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, United States Department of Justice to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, statements made during the review by that body of the US and its torture policies during the past five years, could be considered as subsumed under both of the above two categories. And sadly, Bitkower misrepresented actions taken by the US DOJ.

CIA, Israel plotted senior Hezbollah commander's killing: report

The CIA and Israel's spy agency Mossad were behind an elaborate plot to kill Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh in a 2008 car bomb attack in Syria, the Washington Post reported Friday.

Mariupol-Donetsk-Frunza! Can Poroshenko Escape Crimes Against Humanity Trial?

A little over a week ago Petro Poroshenko ordered an all out assault on Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics. Faced with massive losses during the first few days the Poroshenko regime has resorted unsuccessfully to get both republic’s listed as terrorist organizations by the EU and United Nations.

It started with the Volonavaha bus attack after which the bus driver states in an interview with theKorrespondent that a mine exploded and killed his passengers in Ukrainian controlled territory. Images from the scene taken by the Ukrainian army shows a soldier carrying what appears to be a claymore mine. Claymore mines are directional explosives that are set off remotely or by a trip wire.

Kiev is engaging in a game of escalating crimes against humanity. Each attack on civilian populations has been followed by an all out media blitz trying to place blame on the fledgling republics.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Because Ukraine is aligned with the US, which has been committing war crimes against humanity with impunity for so many years, I think Poroshenko believes that he will never be tried or convicted for these crimes.

"We murdered some folks" in Guantanamo

Murder at Camp Delta is a new book by Joseph Hickman, a former guard at Guantanamo. It's neither fiction nor speculation. When President Obama says "We tortured some folks," Hickman provides at least three cases -- in addition to many others we know about from secret sites around the world -- in which the statement needs to be modified to "We murdered some folks." Of course, murder is supposed to be acceptable in war (and in whatever you call what Obama does with drones) while torture is supposed to be, or used to be, a scandal. But what about tortures to death? What about deadly human experimentation? Does that have a Nazi enough ring to disturb anyone?

Report Portrays a Broken C.I.A. Devoted to a Failed Approach

In January 2003, 10 months into the Central Intelligence Agency’s secret prison program, the agency’s chief of interrogations sent an email to colleagues saying that the relentlessly brutal treatment of prisoners was a train wreck “waiting to happen and I intend to get the hell off the train before it happens.” He said he had told his bosses he had “serious reservations” about the program and no longer wanted to be associated with it “in any way.”

The bitter infighting in the C.I.A. interrogation program was only one symptom of the dysfunction, disorganization, incompetence, greed and deception described in a summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report. In more than 500 pages, the summary, released on Tuesday, paints a devastating picture of an agency that was ill equipped to take on the task of questioning Al Qaeda suspects, bungled the job and then misrepresented the results.

Webmaster's Commentary:

So the US government knew that this program was absolutely not working...but kept doing it anyway, gleefully killing and maiming prisoners of war, physically and psychologically along the way.

There are people who derive immense satisfaction from torturing, or witnessing it being done, or reading about its being done; it is simply unfortunate when some of those people are those who had taken an oath of office to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution", like that unholy trinity of Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld

And unless and until there is an inquiry, where these three people get charged with war crimes, the moral conscience of this country can never, ever come back to normal.

We have become a nation which tortures, and extrajucially assassinates people overseas with absolutely no due process. We have become a nation of economic exploitation in every direction on the globe.

The fastest way to get all terrorism to cease would be for the US to stop mucking about in other countries to claim resources to which we have absolutely no moral right, as well as stopping all support to tinpot dictators because they are "our thugs" (like the Al-Khalifa monarchy in Bahrain.)

New evidence shows CIA held prisoners in Lithuania

New analysis and previously unpublished documents released by legal charity Reprieve show that the CIA held prisoners in Lithuania in 2005 and 2006, contrary to official denials.

In a dossier and briefing submitted to the Lithuanian Prosecutor today, Reprieve reveals how the newly declassified US Senate Report on CIA detention correlates with flight data and contracting documents; and demonstrates that prisoners were moved into Lithuania in February and October 2005, and out of Lithuania to Afghanistan in March 2006.

A previous investigation by Lithuanian prosecutors, shelved in 2011, concluded that the CIA built a facility in a converted stable outside Vilnius, but argued there was no evidence that prisoners were ever held in it.

Police asked to investigate G4S over Guantanamo role

British security firm G4S could be criminally liable for its involvement in Guantanamo Bay, according to a new complaint filed with the Metropolitan Police.

Legal charity Reprieve, which represents several Guantanamo detainees, has reported the UK company to police after learning of a $113 million (£71 million) contract for G4S to supply ‘base services’ at the US prison through its US subsidiary, G4S Government Solutions (G4S GS). The exact nature of the services to be provided under the contract is unclear, prompting concerns that the company could be complicit in rights abuses under way at the prison, such as force-feeding.

What would Happen if the Int’l Criminal Court Indicted Israel’s Netanyahu?

If the International Criminal Court takes up Israeli government actions in the occupied Palestinian territories, it could well find specific officials guilty of breaches of the Rome Statute of 2002. Article 7 forbids “Crimes against Humanity,” which are systematically repeated war crimes. Among these offenses is murder, forcible deportation or transfer of members of a group, torture, persecution of Palestinians (an “identifiable group”) and “the crime of Apartheid.”

There Are Several Thousand Secret Photos of America's Horrific Torture Program. Should Obama Release Them?

You may recall, from the dark days of Abu Ghraib, that there was a batch of photos that was never released—images the Pentagon deemed so inflammatory that they needed to stay under wraps. The ones we saw were disturbing enough: the piles of naked Iraqi prisoners, the soldier giving a thumbs up next to an ice-packed corpse, the prisoners being menaced by dogs. And who can forget that iconic shot of a hooded man (his name is Ali Shalil Qaissi), standing on a box in a shower with wires attached to his fingers—a mock execution. There are as many as 2,100 additional images, according to the ACLU, which sued the government in 2004 demanding their release. President Obama has resisted the legal efforts, noting in a statement that to make the photos public would "impact the safety of our troops."

Webmaster's Commentary:

Actually, release of the photos will impact the safety of our leaders who ordered the use of these methods, and frankly I see that as a good thing! So yes, release them all. We The People have a right to know what the government has been doing with our money and in our name. And if it is war crimes, which seems to be the case, We The People have a moral obligation to crate up these leaders ourselves and ship them to the Hague for trial.
