Oops! New York Times corrects Skripal story, says no ‘dead ducks’ or ‘sick kids’ from ‘Novichok’

The New York Times has corrected a report that UK officials had shared photos with the CIA depicting children and animals who’d been exposed to the so-called Novichok nerve agent after coming into contact with the Skripals.

The Times reported on April 16 that the British government had supplied images of “young children hospitalized” and of dead ducks, inadvertently poisoned after interactions with Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia at a park in Salisbury in March of last year. The paper pointed to the “sloppy work of the Russian operatives” who were blamed for what London calls a nerve agent attack last year.

While the original story claimed the images were used to convince US President Donald Trump to expel 60 Russian diplomats from the US in response to the Skripal episode, the Times now says no such photos exist.

YouTube bans Holocaust denial videos in policy reversal

YouTube said on Wednesday it would remove videos that deny factual catastrophes such as the Holocaust ever happened and stop sharing ad revenue with channels that skirt too close to its rules, a major policy reversal as it fights criticism that it provides a platform for hate speech and harassment.

The streaming service, owned by Alphabet Inc's Google, said it was taking aim at videos claiming school shootings and other "well-documented violent events" are hoaxes. It also will remove videos that glorify Nazi ideology or promote groups that claim superiority to justify discrimination.

In addition, video creators that repeatedly brush up against YouTube's hate speech policies, even without violating them, will be removed from its advertising revenue-sharing programme, YouTube spokesman Farshad Shadloo said.

More Police Raids As War On Journalism Escalates Worldwide

The Australian Federal Police have conducted two raids on journalists and seized documents in purportedly unrelated incidents in the span of just two days.

Yesterday the AFP raided the home of News Corp Australia journalist Annika Smethurst, seeking information related to her investigative report last year which exposed the fact that the Australian government has been discussing the possibility of giving itself unprecedented powers to spy on its own citizens. Today they raided the Sydney headquarters of the Australian Broadcasting Corp, seizing information related to a 2017 investigative report on possible war crimes committed by Australian forces in Afghanistan.

In a third, also ostensibly unrelated incident, another Australian reporter disclosed yesterday that the Department of Home Affairs has initiated an investigation of his reporting on a story about asylum seeker boats which could lead to an AFP criminal case, saying he’s being pressured to disclose his source.

Fox News Threw a Curveball That Had Viewers Asking One Big Question

There are changes occurring at Fox News.

Viewers, including President Trump, are wondering if Fox News is giving in to its liberal critics.

And now Fox News threw a curveball that had viewers asking this one big question.

Fox News is trying to get in on the Democrat Presidential primary.

But the Democrat National Committee banned Fox News Channel from hosting a candidate debate after fake news reporter Jane Mayer published a story in the New Yorker falsely accusing Fox News of being state-run media for the Trump administration.

Since then, Fox News has bent over backwards for the Democrats to prove they “could be fair.”

Spies Are the New Journalists

There are two sets of laws in the United States today. One is inscribed in law books and applies to the majority of Americans. The other is a canon of privileges enjoyed by an establishment under the umbrella of an intelligence bureaucracy that has arrogated to itself the rights and protections of what was once a free press.

The media is now openly entwined with the national security establishment in a manner that would have been unimaginable before the advent of the age of the dossier—the literary forgery the FBI used as evidence to spy on the Trump team. In coordinating to perpetrate the Russiagate hoax on the American public, the media and intelligence officials have forged a relationship in which the two partners look out for the other’s professional and political interests. Not least of all, they target shared adversaries and protect mutual friends.

Is Amazon using false information to censor book reviews?

It's an unavoidable fact of modern life that online companies know a lot about your online activity – buy stuff on Amazon, and of course that means Amazon knows what kind of stuff you buy. Post political content on Facebook, and Facebook knows what sort of political content you're wont to post. It's as obvious as pointing out “When you introduce yourself to people, it lets those people know who you are.”

But for all the potentially disturbing privacy implications of companies using such data to draw up accurate and truthful profiles about you, it's arguably a lot worse when companies jump to completely wrong conclusions — and place limits on your behavior as a result.

Yet blogger Imy Santiago says that's exactly what Amazon is doing. Specifically, she says Amazon is refusing to post a review she'd written about an e-book, out of the false belief that Santiago is friends with the author (and thus, the review presumably is not an honest one).

Top US Journalists Spread Fake News Claiming North Korean Official Was ‘Purged’ – Then He Shows Up on TV

The corporate media’s editorial standards for reporting on Official Enemies of the US government, especially North Korea, are as low as ever. Blatantly false stories are regularly circulated by leading news outlets without any kind of accountability.

In the latest example of fake news disseminated without any hint of skepticism by America’s top journalists, virtually every major media outlet reported that a senior North Korean official named Kim Yong-chol was supposedly forced into a “labor camp,” as part of a larger deadly “purge.”

Two days later, that same official turned up alive at a public art performance, seated next to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

‘This will not go well’: YouTube cracks down on pundits & journalists after policy change

Minutes after announcing a new policy clamping down on “hateful” and “supremacist” videos, YouTube got to work banning, demonetizing, or otherwise hiding videos from conservatives, journalists, and even black metal musicians.

The Google subsidiary updated its “hateful content” policies on Wednesday, announcing the clampdown in a blog post. The company said that from now on it will be “specifically prohibiting videos alleging that a group is superior in order to justify discrimination, segregation or exclusion.” Other videos that don’t strictly violate the site’s rules - including those promoting phony science or conspiracy theories - will be subject to demonetization, and other measures to restrict their viewership.

Orwellian in theory? In practice, too. YouTube didn’t wait long before wielding the ban-hammer with glee.

'We are not a monopoly!' Apple CEO Tim Cook fights back as major US tech companies struggle to recover from FTC antitrust probe announcement which tanked share prices

Apple CEO Tim Cook denied his company was a monopoly on Tuesday after it was revealed that a Federal Trade Commission investigation was in the works into his company and others which critics say have too much power.

In an interview with CBS, Cook said Apple did not control a majority in any market and that while he welcomes scrutiny, he disagrees with the suggestion that he should split up parts of the business.

It came a day after stocks plummeted on Monday after reports emerged that the FTC was leading an antitrust investigation into Facebook Inc and its practices.

Mainstream Media Ratings Plummet Amidst Major Credibility Crisis

Last month, CNN saw a 16% collapse in their primetime ratings. This comes after the network offered voluntary buyouts to 100 employees in that same month.

CNN’s primetime viewers reached only 761,000 viewers and their total day viewers crashed 9% compared to the same month last year, averaging only 559,000 viewers.

CNN’s supposed flagship morning show, New Day, only averages an underwhelming 485,000 viewers.

Internet shutdowns don't make anyone safer

Around the world, governments are hitting on a modish new idea: Turn the internet off. Sometimes they mean it literally.

Methods vary, but the trend is clear enough. Countries are increasingly ordering telecoms and other companies to block network access, shut down messaging services, or otherwise restrict digital applications or websites, usually citing public order or national-security concerns. In extreme cases, internet access can be “blacked out” entirely. Worldwide, such shutdowns rose to 188 last year, up from 75 in 2016.

The image appeared in Google’s “snippet,” the featured result that appears above search and is aimed at answering a searcher’s question right away.

The Deep State And The Deep Media

To fully understand the Deep State one need focus on matters both inside and outside of government. The Deep State corrupts everything it touches. Today that includes much of the country.

The Deep State corrupted the media.

The first task of any State is to control the information (propaganda) fed to its citizens. Totalitarian states eliminate any free exchange of opinions. The Soviet Union had a state-run newspaper known as Pravda. It was a monopoly in that no other sources legally provided news. The new Russia pretends it has press freedom, but it controls the media. So does China. Severe penalties, including murder, are used to obtain conformity.

In the US, we say we have freedom and a “free press.” But do we?

Google Parses Your Gmail For Financial Transactions

Recently I came across this story by Todd Haselton that describes how the author located an obscure “purchases” page in his Google account settings and there found a methodical list of his online purchasing history, from third-party outside vendors, going back to 2o12.

The upshot of the story was that:

Google saves years of information on purchases you’ve made, even outside Google, and pulls this information from Gmail.

It’s complicated to delete this private information, and options to turn it off are hidden in privacy settings.

Google says it doesn’t use this information to sell you ads.

Naturally, I flagged this story for the next edition of our #AxisOfEasy newsletter. Haselton reports that it isn’t easy to locate and delete this information, nor is there a straight-forward path to find it in your privacy settings to disable this behaviour.

For Tech Giants, a Cautionary Tale From 19th Century Railroads on the Limits of Competition

Late 19th-century Americans loved railroads, which seemed to eradicate time and space, moving goods and people more cheaply and more conveniently than ever before. And they feared railroads because in most of the country it was impossible to do business without them.

Businesses, and the republic itself, seemed to be at the mercy of the monopoly power of railroad corporations. American farmers, businessmen and consumers thought of competition as a way to ensure fairness in the marketplace. But with no real competitors over many routes, railroads could charge different rates to different customers. This power to decide economic winners and losers threatened not only individual businesses but also the conditions that sustained the republic.

Even Scientific American has abandoned science by embracing the pseudoscience of transgenderism

In a recent issue of Scientific American, these powers that be made sure to include an article pushing their vision of a “gender-free” future. In it, the author suggests that it’s no longer acceptable to use words like “him” or “her” to describe men and women, instead urging widespread use of the generic term “them” to describe everyone.

It no longer matters, in other words, what a person’s chromosomes say about his or her unique biological sex – because that’s so old-fashioned, in case you didn’t know. No, it’s now about calling everyone the exact same thing so that we’re all exactly the same, and all “equal” – meaning no more men or women, but rather one universally identical existence as “people-kind,” or something.

US Media Continues Spreading Lies About Russia And Venezuela

Data from the newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the presence of employees of the state corporation Rostec (Russian Technologies) are exaggerated, Sputnik told a source of the press service of the Russian company.

On June 1, the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal reported, quoting an anonymous source close to the Russian Ministry of Defense, that Rostec decreased its staff in Venezuela from 1,000 to a few dozen.

According to the media, the retreat of Rostec employees, responsible for training Venezuelan troops, has intensified in recent months.

“The figures published in the Wall Street Journal article regarding the presence of Rostec employees in Venezuela are exaggerated dozens of times,” a source said in response to the Journal’s claims.

Justice Department launches Google anti-monopoly probe

Just before midnight on Friday, at the close of what was a hectic month for markets, WSJ dropped a bombshell of a story: The paper reported that the DoJ has opened an anti-trust investigation of Alphabet Inc., which could “present a major new layer of regulatory scrutiny for the search giant, according to people familiar with the matter.” The report was sourced to “people familiar with the matter,” but was swiftly corroborated by the New York Times, Bloomberg and others.

For months now, the FTC has appeared to be gearing up for a showdown with big tech. The agency – which shares anti-trust authority with the DoJ – has created a new commission that could help undo big-tech tie-ups like Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram, and hired lawyers who have advanced new anti-monopoly theories that would help justify the breakup of companies like Amazon.

The evil tech giants are now systematically de-platforming all channels and sources of real human knowledge, awakening and truth. Professional Assange Smearers Finally Realize His Fate Is Tied To Theirs

Rachel Maddow has aired a segment condemning the new indictment against Julian Assange for 17 alleged violations of the Espionage Act.

Yes, that Rachel Maddow.

MSNBC’s top host began the segment after it was introduced by Chris Hayes, agreeing with her colleague that it’s surprising that more news outlets aren’t giving this story more “wall to wall” coverage, given its immense significance. She recapped Assange’s various legal struggles up until this point, then accurately described Assange’s new Espionage Act charges for publishing secret documents.

“And these new charges are not about stealing classified information or outsmarting computer systems in order to illegally obtain classified information,” Maddow said. “It’s not about that. These new charges are trying to prosecute Assange for publishing that stolen, secret material which was obtained by somebody else. And that is a whole different kettle of fish then what he was initially charged with.”
