The Cat in the Hat as a Child Predator: How These Stories Traumatize and Send the Wrong Messages to Children

The Cat in the Hat books, by Dr. Seuss, have been a part of American childhood for the past several decades. After my son was born, these were some of the first stories I read to him. The illustrations and verse quickly made them some of his favorite books.

Ode to Harry Reid

Here’s to you, Harry….

Harry Reid, you bastard, yes all are agreed

Your concerns for us all are so bullshit indeed

How such a douchebag can have this control

Reminds me of one thing, a thing called a troll

You’re clearly all in it for personal gain

A financial windfall or power regained

You couldn’t be lower on the evolutionary chain

And yet you keep at it, Harry, again and again......

How to Build a Better Easter Basket

The standard Easter basket is pretty much a basket full of cheerfully wrapped poison. It would be difficult to get further away from actual food than a container full of Peeps, chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, and mini-eggs.

But don't despair. Eschewing the toxins doesn't mean that your kiddo must be deprived of all things sweet and yummy on Easter. While the items listed here can't be classified as necessarily nutritious, at least they aren't poisonous.

Officials: Florida Woman Just Attacked by One Bear, Not Five

Things are so bad in the US that black bears are gangin up on people takin out the trash. I gauruntee you that that one bear they got dead to rights will snitch out the other 4!

The woman, identified as Terri Frana, a had left her garage door open, officials with the state's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) told the station.

When she returned to take out the trash five bears attacked and dragged her outside, the station first reported.

But the FWC later changed the bear tale:

"Early media reports that Ms. Frana was attacked by several bears are inaccurate," said wildlife commission spokesman Greg Workman. "There were several bears observed near the area, but one bear is responsible for her injuries."

Noah’s Ark: Moral Lesson, or Barbaric Myth?

But not everybody buys the argument that the Noah story represents justice, grace, and redemption. In a recent episode of Real Time, comedian Bill Maher argues, “the thing that’s really disturbing about Noah isn’t the silly—it’s that it’s immoral. It’s about a psychotic mass-murderer who gets away with it, and his name is God”. After explaining how God became enraged at humanity—even though he himself made humans flawed—Maher asks, “what kind of tyrant punishes everyone just to get back at the few he’s mad at?” He ends by suggesting that, if America is losing its values, maybe it is because American Christians “worship a guy who drowns babies”. For Maher, such a deity is neither just nor gracious.

Sony Demands Removal of Open-Source Indie Short ‘Sintel’ From YouTube

Sony Pictures has demanded the removal of the CGI short film Sintel from YouTube due to a claim of copyright infringement. One small problem: they don’t actually own anything in the film.

Sintel, a film by Colin Levy which has been featured before on Cartoon Brew, was created by the Blender Foundation, the non-profit organization which promotes the free, open source 3D software Blender. The crowdfunded short was made using entirely original materials, and was licensed as Creative Commons Attribution 3.0, which means that anyone can freely share the movie.

The removal of the film is most likely the result of a faulty DMCA take-down request, but it speaks to a bigger and more troubling issue: corporations today have unprecedented control to wipe independent creators off the Internet.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" Is About Obama's Terror-Suspect Kill List, Say the Film's Directors

In The Winter Soldier, Captain America and the rest of the heroes (played by Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and so on) confront the government program Project Insight, which involves three Helicarriers (gigantic autonomous killer drones, basically) that are fed large amounts of data and intel. The Helicarriers process the data to identify and preemptively eliminate potential threats to national and global security. And though the film's topical parts were all crafted prior to the NSA revelations, the directors say it's no accident that data mining is a key element of the plot: "It was all leading up to Snowden," Joe says. "It was all in the ether [already], it was all part of the zeitgeist. The Snowden stuff actually happened while we were shooting."

Terry Gilliam: The Python Who Renounced His Citizenship

Jeff Berwick
The Dollar Vigilante

Terry Gilliam, one of the "Pythons" of Monty Python fame, renounced his US citizenship in 2006 for one critical reason: "There was the fact that my wife would have had to sell the house to be able to afford to pay the taxes when I died."

This is an issue we write about and discuss regularly here at The Dollar Vigilante. It seems Terry saw the writing on the wall. So-much-so, in fact, he made a movie about what I surmise is basically modern America. (read: Amerika)

Union Sundown: The Decline of the American Economy And The Rise of the Bureaucratic Nightmare

Brandon Turbeville
Activist Post

Thirty years ago, Bob Dylan wrote a song called “Union Sundown” that now seems as if it was nothing less than prophecy set to music. The song, which attracted a great deal of hatred from establishment critics at the time, spoke out against the neo-liberal/free trade ideology that was beginning to take hold in the United States. It also took aim at the obsession of turning everything into a commodity the practice of seeking profits above all else...

The top Joe Biden gaffes since January

”Stupid is as stupid does.” One would say that anyone who voted for Obama the first time made a bad choice due to “having the wool pulled over their eyes.” Those same individuals, who voted for Obama a second time, would be considered stupid since Obama exposed his total incompetence to hold the office of the President.

'Noah' hits rough religious waters on-screen

Director Darren Aronofsky has seen his share of controversy in a body of work that has included uncompromising films such as Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan.

But there hasn't been anything quite like the storm that has erupted over his treatment of the Old Testament tale featured in Noah, out Friday. The maelstrom has battle-tested studio heads reaching for appropriate biblical comparisons.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What this means is that the early test received a lukewarm response from the audience, so the PR boys are going to create a "controversy" to get people to go see the movie to find out what all the fuss is about. This is an old PR trick, and I even used it myself back in my college days.
