The governor of Vermont has signed a bill that bans hydraulic fracturing as a means to extract gas from underground deposits.

Gov. Peter Shumlin signed the fracking ban into law Wednesday afternoon, making Vermont the first state to ban the practice.

Hydraulic fracturing is the practice of injecting water and chemicals under high pressure into underground shale to release natural gas.

"We don't know that we don't have natural gas in Vermont," Shumlin said. "This bill will ensure we do not inject chemicals into groundwater in a desperate pursuit for energy."

Key US counter terrorism actions in Yemen
Since 2011 US counter terrorism operations in Yemen have been conducted by both the Pentagon and the Central Intelligence Agency. Attacks are aimed at Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and more recently, Ansar al-Sharia.

US activity may also consist of naval bombardments and air strikes, often in conjunction with, or in support of, the Yemen military.

As Yemen came under severe pressure during the Arab Spring and militants seized control of cities and towns in the south, the US significantly stepped up its attacks, most notably with drone strikes.

Although their presence over there is not a secret (since it was announced about 10 years ago and you can see some by simply pointing Google Earth on Djibouti International Airport, as done in this interesting OSGEOINT analysis) what’s still unclear is what eight U.S. F-15Es are currently doing in the Horn of Africa.

They are reportedly serving in support of Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, as an Expeditionary Squadron of the 380th Expeditionary Operations Group, based at Al Dhafra, in the United Arab Emirates, and responsible for the “war on terror” in the region, but what’s their actual mission remains a (sort-of) mystery.

Even if the American military presence across the world is usually very well advertised, the U.S. keep a low profile on the operations launched by the Air Force’s Strike Eagles from Eastern Africa.

The reason for such prudence maybe that, along with the Reaper drones, even the F-15Es are conducting air strikes in Yemen (and Somalia).

As they say, it's not over 'till it's over. Palestinian prisoners have been mass hunger striking since April 17. Others began earlier. Some haven't eaten for two months or longer.

On May 14, a deal was announced. Egypt negotiated one with the Israel Prison Service (IPS) and striker representatives. Palestine Prisoners Society head Qadura Fares confirmed it. So did Israeli authorities.

Independent verification didn't follow. Nor did full clarification of terms. Israel's adept at creating considerable opt-out wiggle room. Deals aren't always as they seem. Broken ones reveal charades.

Israel offered concessions. Prisoners agreed to terms. Some remain vague. The devil's in the details. What's ahead remains uncertain. Israel's history reflects promises made and broken. Palestinians know well.

France’s unemployment rate has risen to 10 percent, with millions of French citizens looking for work as Europe’s economic crisis shows no sign of letting up.

Nearly three-quarters of Americans and more than two-thirds of Republicans believe federal officials should respect state laws on medical marijuana, a new Mason-Dixon survey of 1,000 likely 2012 general election voters found.

"What the results of this survey show is that there is absolutely no political justification for what President [Barack] Obama is doing with respect to medical marijuana laws," Steve Fox, director of government relations for The Marijuana Policy Project, told HuffPost on Tuesday afternoon. But in their hunger, the strikers are acquiring names. I do not mean names on an obscure website, but ones that appear repeatedly in the daily press and on television, and have wide circulation in the social media. The most prominent name is that of Khader Adnan, a baker and MA student in economics at Birzeit University in the West Bank. Adnan was released from an Israeli jail after 66 excruciating days of hunger strike that commenced on February 21 of this year. He opted for self-starvation to protest what legal jargon calls “administrative detention,” which in this case amounted to abduction by a foreign state that had no legal grounds whatsoever for seizing him.

Two recently released medical reports indicate Trayvon Martin's knuckles were injured before he died and Zimmerman sustained injuries during the struggle with the teen, according to WFTV and ABC News.

Also on Tuesday, ABC News reported that Zimmerman had broken his nose and sustained two black eyes, cuts to the back of his head, and a minor back injury during the incident.

The Spanish banking system is an absolute disaster zone at this point and on Monday night Moody's downgraded the credit ratings of 26 Italian banks.

Monsanto has recently been noted as one of the key power players in the welfare of people across the country, continually extending their influence to the more remote parts of the world as well. Monsanto has also been engineering extensively genetically modified crops for the past several decades, and now finally has a type of soybean crop that can survive sustained pesticide exposure – for maximum insect control of course...

He also had no kind words for presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, the Daily News reported.

"Our guy isn't any good," Johnston said.

So we have reached the point where the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Everyone, with the possible exception of the U.S. Congress, has become aware that there is something terribly wrong with Israel.

In Israel itself, where there is often ferocious debate over the country’s policies, it is time for a reckoning. Does Israel want to become a normal state with correct relationships with its neighbors, including an independent Palestine, or does it want to continue down the road that it is pursuing, which is folly and will lead to ruin?

If General Dempsey really wants to end the war on Islam, he should go to whatever lengths are necessary to expose the truth about 9/11. To that end, he ought to consider a Constitutional Counter-Coup in which all those complicit in 9/11 and its cover-up are suddenly and without warning detained and charged by military courts rather than the neocon-owned federal judiciary.

In his letter Alexis Tsipras wrote that the election on May 6 had exposed a strong anti-austerity mood among the Greek population. As a result, the new Greek parliament proved unable to form a working government. All this has stripped Greece's bailout commitments of “political legitimacy.”

Two policemen have been injured as hundreds of protesters hurled red paint and eggs at officers guarding Equitalia, Italy's tax collection office, in Naples following the suicide of yet another debt-ridden Italian citizen.

Several Minnesota moms who facilitate access to local farm food are planning to act despite the risk of criminal charges laid out in warnings from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).

The MDA has threatened several of them, and has already conducted investigations against them. The letters warn that if they continue helping provide fresh food to their friends and neighbors, the MDA will press criminal charges and prosecute. The MDA holds that the mothers are violating food-handling regulations...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon said Tuesday it is sending military trainers back to Yemen for "routine" counterterrorism cooperation with Yemeni security forces amid an intensified battle against an offshoot of the al-Qaida terror network.

"We have begun to reintroduce small numbers of trainers into Yemen," a Pentagon spokesman, Navy Capt. John Kirby, told reporters.

The AP compared the poll to a late 1971 poll on the Vietnam War, which showed 65% of Americans opposed to continuing that war. But while the US was slowly beginning its withdrawal from Vietnam at that time, President Obama is just one week off of signing a deal to keep US troops occupying Afghanistan through 2024.
