Is U.S. Media Coverage of Ukraine and Syria Even Worse than Its Coverage of Iraq? Unprecedented Propaganda Blitz

Over the last year, we’ve documented that – despite all of the mea culpas for horrible Iraq coverage – the U.S. media’s coverage of Ukraine and Syria is just as biased, superficial and pro-war.

Former Associated Press and Newsweek reporter Robert Parry – who broke several of the biggest stories regarding Iran-Contra, and recipient of the George Polk Award for National Reporting in 1984 - writes of U.S. media coverage of the conflict in Ukraine is even worse than Iraq.

The Long War Journal reported in its post, “Former Guantanamo detainee killed while leading jihadist group in Syria,” that:

"Ibrahim Bin Shakaran, a Moroccan who spent more than three years at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility before being released to Moroccan custody, has been killed while leading a jihadist group that fights Syrian government forces." ...

Curiously absent from The Long War Journal’s report is any mention of how Bin Shakaran made it into northern Syria in the first place...

Promoting a “Right to Heal” from Ft. Hood to Abu Ghraib

Veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars are holding the U.S. government accountable for innocent victims on all sides of the fighting.

The recent shootings of soldiers at Fort Hood and other U.S. military bases have once again brought to public attention the challenge of making sure that soldiers returning from war zones find security and support at home. The Washington Post calls the pressures on veterans “the next war.” But whatever war comes next, those existing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their consequences continue.

The exploding rates of suicide among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, the escalating numbers of soldiers turning their weapons on each other as well as themselves, and the endemic spread of PTSD all are linked to the wars themselves. Wars of aggression and occupation have an enormous, terrible effect on the young women and men ordered to fight them.

Pulitzer-Prize Winning Reporter Sy Hersh: Benghazi Is a HUGE Scandal … But Not For the Reason You Think

A highly classified annex to the report, not made public, described a secret agreement reached in early 2012 between the Obama and Erdo?an administrations. It pertained to the rat line. By the terms of the agreement, funding came from Turkey, as well as Saudi Arabia and Qatar; the CIA, with the support of MI6, was responsible for getting arms from Gaddafi’s arsenals into Syria. A number of front companies were set up in Libya, some under the cover of Australian entities. Retired American soldiers, who didn’t always know who was really employing them, were hired to manage procurement and shipping. The operation was run by David Petraeus, the CIA director who would soon resign when it became known he was having an affair with his biographer.

The Red Line and the Rat Line

Barring a major change in policy by Obama, Turkey’s meddling in the Syrian civil war is likely to go on. ‘I asked my colleagues if there was any way to stop Erdo?an’s continued support for the rebels, especially now that it’s going so wrong,’ the former intelligence official told me. ‘The answer was: “We’re screwed.” We could go public if it was somebody other than Erdo?an, but Turkey is a special case. They’re a Nato ally. The Turks don’t trust the West. They can’t live with us if we take any active role against Turkish interests. If we went public with what we know about Erdo?an’s role with the gas, it’d be disastrous. The Turks would say: “We hate you for telling us what we can and can’t do.”’

CIA, MI6 and Turkey's rogue game in Syria: New claims say Ankara worked with the US and Britain to smuggle Gaddafi's guns to rebel groups

The US's Secretary of State John Kerry and its UN ambassador, Samantha Power have been pushing for more assistance to be given to the Syrian rebels.

A second and little-regarded theme of Hersh's article is what the CIA called the rat line, the supply chain for the Syrian rebels overseen by the US in covert cooperation with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

The information about this comes from a highly classified and hitherto secret annex to the report by the US Senate Intelligence Committee on the attack by Libyan militiamen on the US consulate in Benghazi on 11 September 2012 in which US ambassador Christopher Stevens was killed. The annex deals with an operation in which the CIA, in cooperation with MI6, arranged the dispatch of arms from Mu'ammer Gaddafi's arsenals to Turkey and then across the 500-mile long Turkish southern frontier with Syria.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Instead of attempting to destabilize regimes around the world in service to the money junkies, the US government should be focusing on bringing back decently paying jobs to the US; the care of the most fragile among us; and the rebuilding of America's crumbling infrastructure.

But of course, that doesn't make money for the military-industrial or security-industrial complex. The politicians from the top down are bought and paid for by the large corporations which own them, and fund their election cycles. We the People really have no say on who gets elected, because those elected only serve the interests of the very wealthy in this country.

Syria Poison Gas Attack: Rebels, Government Blame Each Other

Syrian government media and rebel forces said Saturday that poison gas had been used in a central village, injuring scores of people, while blaming each other for the attack.

The main Western-backed opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, said the poison gas attack Friday hurt dozens of people in the village of Kfar Zeita in the central province of Hama. It did not say what type of gas was used.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that people suffered from suffocation and breathing problems after the attack, apparently conducted during air raids that left heavy smoke over the area. It gave no further details.

State-run Syrian television blamed members of the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front for using chlorine gas at Kfar Zeita, killing two people and injuring more than 100.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The US government is supporting horrific acts by rebels against the Syrian people, because they are driven by both desperation, and timing.

If Al-Assad stands for re-election, and does get re-elected in what observers characterize as a "relatively free and fair election", the "official" US rationale for ousting him will shatter.

And elections are due to be held this July, so the US doesn't have much time left.

‘Armenian genocide’ bill passes U.S. Senate Committee with 12 votes

An “Armenian genocide” resolution has passed the U.S. Senate's Foreign Relations Committee on April 10 by bipartisan voice.

Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey who chairs the Foreign Relations Committee, and Mark Kirk, a Republican from Illinois, had presented the bill last week.

“Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, during which 1.5 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turkey ... To honor the survivors and the memory of those lost, and to lead globally on human rights, the United States should finally join the European Union and 11 of our NATO allies in officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” Kirk had said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why this bill and why now?

Armenian Americans are very angry at US support to Turkey while Turkey is sending their supported Jihadists into Syria to kill Christians in general, and Armentian in particular.

The last attack on Kessab, Armenian town, angered Armenia and Armenian Americans. They wanted the US senate and their Congress members to stand against Turkey and do something about such attacks.

Instead of criticising Turkish acts of supporting Jihadists now operating inside Syria, the Senate brought in a bill sponsered by Senator Menendez against Turkey for events under Ottoman Empire, almost a century ago to pacify the Armenian Americans community.

Iran, Orientalism, and Western Illusions about Syria

The Syrian war is about Israel and its controlled politicians in the West taking revenge on a government that has single-handedly stood up against the Zionist regime for three decades and has defended resistance groups in Palestine and Lebanon, and the war is about targeting Iran.

The U.S. and EU sanctions on Iran, along with the constant vilification of Iran by these countries or the “international community” as they narcissistically call themselves, are immoral and inhumane.

A number of oil-rich Gulf State monarchies, with Western coordination and logistical support have—in violation of international law—heavily funding sectarian extremists and al-Qaeda affiliates in Syria.
Continued support for foreign extremists and al-Qaeda affiliates is no longer simply a regional threat; it has become a global threat much greater than what existed in Afghanistan.

Syrian Rebels Have US-Made Anti-Tank Missiles

US military intervention in the Syrian Civil War has mostly taken the form of small arms and equipment for various rebel factions, but looks to be picking up the pace dramatically, as new videos come out showing US-made BGM-71 TOW anti-tank missiles in rebel hands.

Two different rebel factions, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and a faction allied with the Islamic Front are claiming to have the weapons, though the US is still not officially confirming they were the direct suppliers.

In recent weeks the reports have said the US was less and less concerned about the shipments, preferring to see the civil war escalate at any cost, and apparently willing to deal with the inevitable backlash when the weapons start showing up in al-Qaeda’s hands.

Webmaster's Commentary:

ABSOFLIPPINGLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE!!

And I would like to ask the geniuses in DC just what happens if Al-Assad stands for re-election, and gets overwhelmingly re-elected in what is characterized by outside observers as a universally "free and fair" election?!?!?

Should this happen, and it well may, you can count American foreign policy on this accusation of "al-Assad torturing his own people" to be well and truly flushed.

Arming these rebels is only going to add to the misery of the Syrian people, because any doctrinal difference between the rebels and the people of this country are viewed by these rebels as an act of war.

Lastly, if the US government thinks that a non-Al-Assad government in Syria is going to be Western-centric and compliant to all of the US's demands (such as potentially staging an attack against Iran from Syria), it had damned well better think again!!!

NATO and Turkey’s Genocidal War on Syria

On March 16, the third anniversary of the NATO-led covert war on Syria, the Syrian army won a landmark victory by taking back the Yabroud town on the Lebanese border.3 Hours later, NATO-backed ‘Al-Nusra Front in Lebanon’ retaliated by launching a false-flag bombing attack in Lebanon.4

On March 18-19, the Israeli army bombarded Syrian Army positions by tank and artillery fire and airstrikes.5

On March 21, NATO-backed mercenary forces and Turkish Armed Forces launched a massive offensive on the Syrian border town of Kasab in the Latakia province. The unprecedented overt military aggression by Turkey and its NATO allies is the clearest indication of their desperation in the face of Syria’s steady progress towards a decisive victory on all fronts.

This article details the flagrant war crimes committed by Turkey and NATO during the ongoing offensive on Kasab and puts them in a context.

Syria false flag and sarin deception

Hersh's new article, entitled "The Red Line and the Rat Line," builds on his earlier article "Whose Sarin?" In the two articles, Hersh provides evidence that top US officials knew that the al-Ghouta chemical weapons attack was a false flag just days after it happened – and that President Obama canceled his plan to bomb Syria because British Intelligence informed him that "the gas used didn’t match the batches known to exist in the Syrian army’s chemical weapons arsenal."

Instead, Hersh shows, the attack was conducted by the al-Qaeda linked al-Nusra Front with help from elements of Turkish and Saudi intelligence. And Obama knew it. He decided that it wasn't worth bombing Syria, in case the whole thing ended in disaster and the false flag got publicly exposed.

US has reportedly started supplying Syrian rebels with anti-tank weapons

Rebels embattled against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad have reportedly come into possession of high-powered anti-tank weaponry, the likes of which may have been supplied by the United States.

Images of rebels equipped with heavy arms have begun to circulate in recent days, and at least one news site has claimed that the source responsible is the US government.

On Monday, Israel’s Debkafile website reported that two moderate Syrian rebel militias — the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Revolutionary Front — have been supplied with advanced US weapons, including armor-piercing, optically-guided BGM-71 TOW missiles, thanks to the Pentagon.

Webmaster's Commentary:

IF in fact these reports are true, it marks a very dangerous turning point in US support of these rebels.

What is likely to happen, if the Al-Assad government is deposed, is the establishment of a virulently anti-US government in Damascus, which is the polar opposite of what the US government wants to see happen.

British intelligence had obtained a sample of the sarin used in the 21 August attack and analysis demonstrated that the gas used didn’t match the batches known to exist in the Syrian army’s chemical weapons arsenal. The message that the case against Syria wouldn’t hold up was quickly relayed to the US joint chiefs of staff. The British report heightened doubts inside the Pentagon; the joint chiefs were already preparing to warn Obama that his plans for a far-reaching bomb and missile attack on Syria’s infrastructure could lead to a wider war in the Middle East. As a consequence the American officers delivered a last-minute caution to the president, which, in their view, eventually led to his cancelling the attack.

Obama’s Redline, Erdogan’s False Flag and the Rat Line Channel Highway into Syria

The full extent of US co-operation with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar in assisting the rebel opposition in Syria has yet to come to light. The Obama administration has never publicly admitted to its role in creating what the CIA calls a ‘rat line’, a back channel highway into Syria. The rat line, authorised in early 2012, was used to funnel weapons and ammunition from Libya via southern Turkey and across the Syrian border to the opposition.

Media Manipulation: Seymour Hersh Unearths More Lies on Syria

Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has a second fascinating essay that rewrites the official record of the sarin gas attack on Ghouta, near Damascus, in August last year. As usual, Hersh uses his sources in the US security establishment to throw light on what really took place. The bottom line: Turkey was almost certainly the party responsible for the attack, hoping it would force Obama to honour his threatened “red line” if Assad used chemical weapons. Was the Assad regime to be brought down by a US military campaign, Turkey assumed it would be able to turn Syria into a client state.

Obama, the Sauds, and Bottomless Hypocrisy

Saudi Arabia’s role as the “world’s largest oil exporter” is only one contributing factor to America’s bottomless hypocrisy regarding its relations with the Saudi Kingdom. Some readers will think I glorify the Russian leader and denigrate the Americans as if on autopilot. This is not it. Putin is a gifted statesman: I stand by this observation. Putin defies Obama in Syria as arms flow fuels Assad resurgence

Russian President Vladimir Putin, condemned by NATO for annexing Crimea, is now defying the US in Syria by sending more and deadlier arms to help Bashar al-Assad score a string of advances against insurgents, military experts say.

Dr Assad's army, seeking to end a three-year civil war that has killed 150,000 people and displaced 9 million, started using longer-range Russian Smerch and Uragan rockets for the first time in February, according to Jane's Defence Weekly and Stratfor, a US geopolitical research company.

"Russia is now doing everything to ensure that Assad wins convincingly," Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East analyst at the Moscow Carnegie Center, said by phone. "If Russia can show it's capable of carrying out its own foreign policy, regardless of America's wishes, it will be a major achievement for Putin."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The neutralization of Al-Assad is what some in the west (and in Israel) want to see happen in advance of either a US/Israeli attack against Iran.

Russian officials understand this, and do not want to see Al-Assad removed from office, as a prelude to an attack against Iran, because Russia has vowed to come to Iran's aid, should it be attacked militarily.

War against Iran will most likely mean war with Russia, particuarly with the current escalation of tensions by the US and NATO in Eastern Europe.

What the American government absolutely does not want to see is al-Assad standing for elections this year... and winning, in a relatively free and fair election, handsomely.

Al-Assad's current term in office ends in July of 2014, so if the US and the West are going after regime change, they don't have much time, given today's date on the calendar.

“BDS is irrelevant.” Oh, really?

Rosenberg gives himself a hard time worrying that there would be no more Israel if Israelis had to obey international law and UN resolutions, and return the lands and resources they stole from the Palestinians. It's “an actual country”, he maintains. But I bet he cannot tell us its actual borders.

A quick trip to the BDS movement's website http://www.bdsmovement.net/call will expose Rosenberg's attempt to mislead.

What maddens Zionists most is that they cannot control civil society like they can pull the strings of the spineless political élite. They fear BDS action (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) will derail their precious project for a Greater Israel. So they now sneer at civil society and try to discourage further BDS efforts. This tactic comes across loud and clear in Michael Rosenberg's article 'The Goal Of The BDS Movement Is Dismantling Israel, Not The ’67 Occupation'.

How Americans can help world peace

A first step for world peace is for the American people to rein in their reckless government from the international stage and to stop it making misery for so many.

Americans need democratic government like the rest of the world needs rid of Washington's thuggish global policeman.

This may come as a shock to many ordinary Americans who tend to think that their country is already the beacon of democratic light unto the world, bestowing all sorts of benevolence to others. Such delusional "American exceptionalism" has to stop. America is only special in a very negative meaning. It plays a central part in fomenting conflict in almost every scenario we care to look at.

We see this nefarious US role in the never-ending Israeli-Palestinian travesty known as a "peace process". In reality, this process is but a continual green light for the Israeli regime to commit massive violation of international laws against the long-suffering Palestinian people.

Western warmongers getting shot down in flames

But Gordon Duff slipped the hoax story into a long Intel article this weekend for New Eastern Outlook in Moscow where the Russian ministry picked it up. Deploying Manpads to the Jihadis would have been a huge escalation of the Syrian war and would have unleashed these weapons into all the other areas being "destabilized." Any Jihadi having one of these could sell it and be able to retire. And so far they have not shown themselves to be very concerned about negative public opinion.

In that regard, they are ideological soul mates of our own 2-bit warmongers in Congress who have been calling for further escalation in Syria with total disregard that it could set the whole region ablaze. Frankly, at Veterans Today we think that is exactly what their goal is, and why we regard Congress as the most dangerous national security threat we face. And the bite of it all is, we the taxpayers pay them for doing this to us.

URGENT: NATO's Turkey Providing Air Support for Al Qaeda in Northern Syria

The downing of a Syrian jet by Turkey was not an isolated incident but part of a major offensive by Al Qaeda affiliated groups Jabhat Al Nusra (designated a terrorist organization by the US State Department) and Ahrar Al Sham against a northwestern Syrian-Turkish border crossing. Turkey has been supporting Al Qaeda’s attack on the Kassab border crossing, the only crossing that was still held by the Syrian military. While the AFP did report that the group involved in the attack was the AlQaeda faction Jabhat Al Nusra , this fact has not made it to any mainstream media headline.

Jabhat Al Nusra, are also actively being given safe haven by Turkey. The map below shows the Al Qaeda Camp within the Turkish border from which the attack on the Kassab border crossing came. AlQaeda militants also brazenly videotaped themselves walking right through the Turkish Kassab border gate into Syria without any harassment from Turkish guards.

No Syria talks for time being: UN-AL envoy

United Nations-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi has dismissed the likelihood of a new round of peace talks on the Syria crisis at the present juncture.

“A return to Geneva is out of question for the time being because the criteria have not been met," Brahimi said in Kuwait on Monday.

Two rounds of talks recently hosted by Brahimi and held in Switzerland have made little progress toward ending the crisis in Syria.

The second round of talks between delegations representing the Syrian government and the so-called Syrian National Coalition in the Swiss city of Geneva hit a deadlock in mid-February with both sides sticking to their positions.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No negotiations completely raises the possibility for outside military intervention here, which will be a lousy development for everyone, including internally displaced Syrians.

What the US absolutely doesn't want to see is Assad re-elected, and the initial election processes are due to begin shortly.

George Galloway, UK Member of Parliament adds, “Well, the Bush and Blair Corporation (BBC), as it became in the run-up to the Iraq war, has almost entirely lost its reputation for journalistic integrity. A full inquiry must be launched into why the BBC used a piece of material which was not just wrong but was falsified, and falsified with the purpose of propelling our country into war. That’s not what the British public pays its BBC licence fee for, so that it can be tricked into a war.”

Will Israel kill US empire this week?

The US empire, which might be more accurately termed the New World Order bankster empire, seems to be lashing out blindly as it enters its death spasms.

In Ukraine – as in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere – the Empire's forces are in disarray. The loss of Crimea, and setbacks in Syria, are merely the latest of many debacles. The cause of this ongoing disaster: A series of self-inflicted wounds.

The worst wounds have been self-inflicted by the Empire's lunatic fringe: the Israel-centric neoconservatives. This group, which includes both Jewish chauvinists and Christian armageddonites, is burdened by fanatical devotion to an impossible project: The maintenance of a sustainable "Jewish state" in Occupied Palestine.

Was shoot down of Syrian plane linked to Turkish elections?

The first sentence of any news analysis about the Syrian plane shot down March 23 cannot be complete unless it notes that the plane was shot down one week before the March 30 local elections.

On March 24, as this article was being written, Ankara authorities had not yet released sufficient or persuasive information to the public that the Syrian plane was posing a direct and critical security threat that needed to be eliminated.

Putin all smiles over expected Syrian 'victory'

Arab countries in the Middle East widely expect Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to win the rebel-led insurgency that has been targeting his regime for the last three years, thereby strengthening Russia’s presence in the region.

The anticipated victory will further solidify the position of the large Russian Navy fleet docked at Syria’s Tartus port. That position is more strategic now that Russia has seized the Ukrainian naval headquarters located in Sevastopol, where Moscow stationed its Black Sea Fleet.

Control of both the Tartus and Sevastopol ports provides Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, with open access to the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and beyond for both military and energy needs.

Syrian jet shot down near Turkish border - media

It was not immediately clear who was responsible.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights quoted local residents as saying the plane was brought down by shooting from the Turkish side of the border. Al Manar, the television station of Lebanon's Hezbollah group, said two rockets were fired from Turkish territory.

But Turkish media quoted officials as denying Turkey had shot it down and said Syrian rebels were responsible.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The initial report was that the plane was inside Turkish air space when shot down, but it appears the plane was still on Syria's side when attacked.

IDF Drills Invasion of Syria

On March 20, 2014, Hebrew media main story was Russian preparations for occupying additional areas of Ukraine. The day after Syria achieved gains in the Golan Heights, the IDF started a hurried drill which enjoyed an unusual media coverage in real time. The exercise prepares forces for entrance into Syria. US Expels Syrian Diplomats – Dangerous Desperation in the Air

The United States has officially told the Syrian government to immediately suspend its diplomatic and consular missions in the country, and ordered its diplomats to leave the country if they are not US citizens.

“We have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations in the United States,” US special envoy for Syria, Daniel Rubinstein, said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The move is suspected by many to be in retaliation for the permanent reversal of fortunes for US-backed militants operating inside of Syria, and perhaps the prelude to an act of Western aggression in response to other geopolitical loses elsewhere, including Crimea.

Ukraine, Syria, Venezuela and beyond: Beware the Wars of March

In the 1930s it was a notorious fact the German government of Adolf Hitler chose the month 0f March ( Ides of Mars), to perpetrate its most daring moves in reasserting the nation as a continental power, culminating in the most deadly war in history.

For example:

March 1933: German federal election brings Hitler to power as chancellor

March 1936: Germany remilitarizes the Rhineland in contravention of the Treaty of Versailles

March 1937: The Third Reich’s Condor Legion bombs and attacks Durango, Spain and the next month bombs Guernica

March 1938: Germany absorbs Austria

Over the past fifteen years a not dissimilar pattern has emerged.

Serbia is proof that when the West gives 1 Euro, it takes 100 Euros. You mentioned the damage of NATO to Yugoslavia $120 billion. But even what was not destroyed, that was privatized by criminal privatization. Amid carnage of war, Syria readies for Assad re-election

After three years of grinding conflict, the destruction of whole city districts and an exodus of refugees all triggered by an uprising against his rule, Bashar al-Assad is quietly preparing to be re-elected.

BEX ALERT - Israel says naval raid seizes Iranian shipment of advanced rockets bound for Gaza militants

Israeli naval forces raided a ship in the Red Sea early Wednesday and seized dozens of advanced rockets from Iran destined for Palestinian militants in Gaza that would have significantly boosted their ability to strike Israeli citizens, the military said.

The ship, the KLOS C, was carrying Syrian-made M-302 rockets and was intercepted more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometres) south of Israel off the coasts of Sudan and Eritrea, military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner told reporters.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Note that the rockets are admitted to be made in Syria, but Israel wants to put the blame on Iran.

And note that one of the photos Israel released to prove the missiles came from Iran shows a printed paper WRITTEN IN ENGLISH! And, as an alert reader pointed out, this is actually a label from a bag of cement, not a weapon!

Syria Christians Enter Submission Pact With Al-Qaeda

The first steps toward implementation began last week, but the Christian residents of the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, held by al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) have formally agreed to a dhimmatude agreement under Islamic Law.

A policy mostly phased out centuries ago, a dhimma (protection agreement) obliges AQI to protect the local Christian community, and allows them to practice their religion in private so long as they affirm that they are living in Muslim territory.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Let's call this what it really is: a protection racket.

I suppose the world is supposed to be happy that al-Qaeda in Iraq is no longer killing Syrian Christians outright.

At the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) conference on Monday, U.S. Sen. John McCain thanked AIPAC for its stance in favor of American military action in Syria last summer following the Bashar al-Assad regime’s chemical attack that killed 1,429 civilians.

Norweigan general leads UN team into Syria to talk about UN mission to verify cease-fire

A team led by a Norwegian major general arrived Thursday in Damascus to negotiate the possible deployment of U.N. monitors for any cease-fire between Syrian troops and rebel forces.

Ahmad Fawzi, a spokesman for peace envoy Kofi Annan, reported the arrival and said the U.N. is already asking members to contribute 200 to 250 soldiers to monitor a cease-fire that officials hope would start April 10.

Annan has asked the Norwegian major-general, Robert Mood, to begin discussing with the Syrian authorities “the eventual deployment of this U.N. supervision and monitoring mission,” Fawzi said.

Such a contingent would first have to be authorized by the 15-nation Security Council.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I frankly wouldn't hold my breath that magically, just because of a date on a calendar, that the "rebel forces" (read: hired mercs) will lay down their weapons, and sing "Kumbyah", along with Syrian forces.

My suspicion is that Annan pushed al-Assad for this deadline for cessation of hostilities because such a deadline is not achievable.

And what happens, then, on the 11th of April, if there has been no substantive cease-fire? And what world player will be willing, if not eager, to act, even without a UN mandate?

Were I a betting woman, I would not bet against some kind of "shadow NATO engagement" to bring about regime change, but the kind of involvement which couldn't quite be pinned directly on NATO by a very angered China and Russia, which would, reasonably, see such an action as an "end-run" against the UN, and done without any UN mandate whatever.

Syria: America Steps onto the Slippery Slope

As I've said before, the Syrian situation is such a mess that I don't claim to have a solution. And I guess that limits how indignant I can get about solutions that other people are pushing, including those that my government is pursuing. But could we at least be honest about we're doing? The U.S., by giving the rebels this communications equipment, is now officially helping Syrians kill other Syrians. That's a big step.

There was one other big development at the "Friends of Syria" conference that the Times story was about: Some Arab states are creating a $100 million fund to pay rebel soldiers. Put these two developments together and this looks a lot like the first few steps toward a thoroughgoing intervention by a coalition involving the U.S., Arab states, and others.

US: UN Must Act Against Syria After April 10 Deadline

A new UN Security Council resolution reiterating their approval of the Kofi Annan ceasefire deal in Syria and urging both sides to stop fighting by April 10 has been stalled on specific wording, with the US seemingly trying to work the resolution into some sort of mandate.

US Ambassador Susan Rice insisted that the United Nations has to act “urgently and seriously” against Syria once the April 10 deadline the Annan government agreed upon passes, assuming there is no halt to operations.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to US Ambassador Susan Rice to the UN: How do you get your Russian and Chinese counterparts on board with the wording of such a resolution?

And if you cannot get them on board with this UN Syrian resolution, Madam Ambassador, what then?!?!?Are we to expect NATO to attack and invade on the 11th?!?

“Friends of Syria”—the antechamber of a wider Mideast war

The so-called “Friends of Syria” conference convened in Istanbul last Sunday marks a major escalation in fomenting civil war and preparing for direct imperialist intervention. What is envisioned and is being actively prepared is a bloodletting that will eclipse the death toll thus far in the Syrian conflict and a war that has the potential of triggering a global conflict threatening millions.

Led by Washington and its principal NATO allies—Britain, France and Germany—together with Saudi Arabia and the rest of the reactionary Persian Gulf oil monarchies and Turkey, the conference produced two substantive developments.
