The Gaza fisherman who built his own reef - and was shot dead there by an Israeli gunboat

The underwater rock formations provide the best fishing grounds off Gaza, but they are just beyond the limit set by the Israelis for local boats. Tawfiq Abu Riyala dreamt up an ingenious plan to solve this problem; but it may have ended up costing him his life.

The 32-year-old fisherman had built up his own artificial rock with planks of wood, tyres, and bits of metal, seemingly well within the area in which he and his colleagues are allowed to operate. It was while he was adding to this pile that an Israeli gunboat opened fire, wounding him fatally.

According to a report by Nigerian Watch, a UK-based magazine for Nigerian communities, hundreds of US Marines are now being stationed in Ghana as the Nigerian elections begin to take place.

The battle for the Middle East's future begins in Yemen as Saudi Arabia jumps into the abyss

Half the Saudi army are Yemeni descent! No wonder they are surrendering in droves.

Saudi Arabia has jumped into the abyss.
Its air attacks on Yemen are a historic and potentially fatal blow to the Kingdom and to the Middle East.

The real “story” is more important. Perhaps half of the Saudi army is of Yemeni tribal origin. Saudi soldiers are intimately – through their own families – involved in Yemen, and the Yemen revolution is a stab in the guts of the Saudi royal family.

Spain: More than 6,600 cases of torture or ill-treatment by police since 2004

According to Amnesty International, Spain tortures. And not just a little. The practice of torture is not systematic but it is not only isolated cases either. In fact, in just the last 10 years the Committee for the Prevention of Torture has collected 6,621 complaints of ill-treatment or torture committed by the police. The figure contrasts with the low number of convictions handed down by the courts. Specifically 752, mostly for misdemeanors and not crimes. In addition, the European Court of Human Rights has condemned Spain in up to 6 cases for not sufficiently investigating these allegations and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture reprimanded the Spanish authorities for failing to investigate allegations of ill-treatment.

Hillary Clinton’s Presidential Campaign Is Now Effectively Over

Hillary Clinton’s unannounced campaign for the U.S. Presidency has already failed. Her arrogance (or else stupidity) in having wiped clean the hard drive of the private server she had used for her emails while she was the U.S. Secretary of State adds insult to the injury already done to her incipient campaign by the earlier revelation that she had evaded the State Department’s record-keeping system and had used her private server for all of her State Department emails and not only for her personal emails. (The NYT had headlined March 2nd: “Hillary Clinton Used Personal Email at State Dept., Possibly Breaking Rules.”)

Experts Admit Conspiracy Theorists Right About Rigged Stock Market: “The Dirty Secret Is Out”

Mac Slavo

Are there really secret manipulations of the economy going on in the shadows of Wall Street and Washington? Do bears crap in the woods?

The NY Post’s controversial columnist John Crudele has thrown down the gauntlet, declaring that the market is rigged. And not only does everyone know it, but it is now being admitted.

The stock market is rigged.

When I started making that claim years ago — and provided solid evidence — people scoffed. Some called it a conspiracy theory, tinfoil hats and that sort of stuff. Most people just ignored me.

But that’s not happening anymore. The dirty secret is out.

21 Wrenching Ernest Hemingway Quotes On Life And War

Ernest Hemingway saw life as a losing battle. Though life would beat you and shred you and knock your teeth in, Hemingway thought he could save his dignity by living dangerously, but bravely. Yemen Exploding: Is the Stage Set for the Big War?

This new expansion of the war in Yemen is a bad sign. The situation could easily worsen, involve many countries, and last for a long time to come. The stage for the “Big War” may well be set and we will be hearing a lot more about Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula in the coming months. If this war gets out of hand, I would expect that the benefits of $45 per barrel of oil will soon end. There is no doubt in my mind that the American people – financially and for security reasons – would be better served if we just came home and avoided these nonsensical military interventions that are carried out in behalf of various special interests that control our foreign policy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Unfortunately, it does appear that Dr. Paul is absolutely correct in his assessment of where things are going here.

But the real confirmation will be the voting through of the Charlie Rangel's legislation for reinstatement of the draft in this country. Currently, the legislation is still sitting in committee, and it appears that rather than kill it outright, the House Armed Services Committee is waiting for the "right moment" to pass it.

Yemen’s Houthis Advance Despite Continued Saudi-Led Strikes

Upset By Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Banks Debate Halting Some Campaign Donations

Big Wall Street banks are so upset with U.S. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren's call for them to be broken up that some have discussed withholding campaign donations to Senate Democrats in symbolic protest, sources familiar with the discussions said.

Representatives from Citigroup, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, have met to discuss ways to urge Democrats, including Warren and Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, to soften their party's tone toward Wall Street, sources familiar with the discussions said this week.

Bank officials said the idea of withholding donations was not discussed at a meeting of the four banks in Washington but it has been raised in one-on-one conversations between representatives of some of them. However, there was no agreement on coordinating any action, and each bank is making its own decision, they said.

The amount of money at stake, a maximum of $15,000 per bank, means the gesture is symbolic rather than material

Webmaster's Commentary:

Don't worry, Wall Street; thinking Americans know that their candidates have been chosen FOR them by both your, and your associates' overt (and covert) contributions to political campaigns.

Ultimately, whoever winds in national leadership roles will be the best politicians money can buy.

US-Saudi Blitz into Yemen: Naked Aggression, Absolute Desperation

The “proxy war” model the US has been employing throughout the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and even in parts of Asia appears to have failed yet again, this time in the Persian Gulf state of Yemen.

Overcoming the US-Saudi backed regime in Yemen, and a coalition of sectarian extremists including Al Qaeda and its rebrand, the “Islamic State,” pro-Iranian Yemeni Houthi militias have turned the tide against American “soft power” and has necessitated a more direct military intervention. While US military forces themselves are not involved allegedly, Saudi warplanes and a possible ground force are.

Though Saudi Arabia claims “10 countries” have joined its coalition to intervene in Yemen, like the US invasion and occupation of Iraq hid behind a “coalition,” it is overwhelmingly a Saudi operation with “coalition partners” added in a vain attempt to generate diplomatic legitimacy.

Houthis shoot down 'hostile' drone in Yemen's capital

The Shiite Houthi group has shot down a "hostile" drone in Yemeni capital Sanaa, a pro-Houthi television channel reported Friday.

Al-Massira television channel said that the drone had been downed in western Sanaa, giving no further details.

There was no comment from Saudi Arabia, which has led a coalition of Arab countries to launch airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen since late Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia said the strikes were in response to calls by Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi for military intervention to "save the people from the Houthi militias."

Catholic Cardinal Raymond Burke Says Gays, remarried Catholics, murderers are all the same

When Pope Francis moved U.S. Cardinal Raymond Burke last year out of a senior post in the Vatican to a largely ceremonial role as head of a Rome-based Catholic charity, many viewed it as a way to sideline one of the pontiff’s most outspoken critics on the right.

But the move hasn’t silenced Burke, who served as the St. Louis archbishop from his installation in 2004 until 2008.

The American cardinal told an interviewer that gay couples and divorced and remarried Catholics who were trying to live good and faithful lives were still like “the person who murders someone and yet is kind to other people.”

Israel through PNAC had told the US military to invade 7 countries for them

Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary for Policy in the Reagan Treasury Department. He could be called the conscience of the Reagan Republicans. The other day in a radio interview Roberts said America has become Murder Incorporated. America has spent trillions of dollars killing millions of Muslims for no rational reason.

You might remember the 7 nations General Wesley Clark said America was to invade beginning with Iraq in 2003. That list came from PNAC (Project for a New American Century) which originally received it from the Israelis. PNAC also received fake intelligence reports on Iraq’s non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs) which they passed onto the White House through the Office for Special Plans in the Pentagon. The OSP was a group created by PNAC for the purpose of getting America to fight a war for Israel in Iraq to do regime change.

For G.O.P., Support for Israel Becomes New Litmus Test

When former Secretary of State James A. Baker III accused Israel’s leader this week of undermining the chances of peace in the region, he said nothing more than the kinds of things he had said at times when he was in office a quarter-century ago.

But the instant backlash from fellow Republicans that prompted Jeb Bush, the son of Mr. Baker’s best friend, to distance himself underscored just how much their party has changed on the issue of Israel. Where past Republican leaders had their disagreements with Israel, today’s Republicans have made support for the Jewish state an inviolable litmus test for anyone aspiring to national office.

San Francisco jail inmates allegedly forced into 'gladiator-style' fights

The Department of Justice has been asked to investigate after prison guards allegedly forced inmates to engage in gladiator-style fights for “sadistic pleasure” and betting, in scenes the authorities said evoked Game of Thrones.

An inmate at the San Francisco County jail who weighed 150lb was allegedly forced to fight a 350lb inmate, under threat of being beaten up and shot with a Taser by guards, Jeff Adachi, the San Francisco County public defender, said in a press conference on Thursday.

Four sheriff’s deputies have been accused by three inmates of orchestrating vicious fights for their own amusement while encouraging them with chants.

Adachi said the deputy who reportedly orchestrated the activities was accused in 2006 of sexually assaulting inmates, in a case that was later settled out of court.

Government Secrecy At All-Time High

US Supreme Court Justice Brandeis said:

Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman.

But there’s no longer much sunlight to disinfect the corruption of the government or the powers-that-be.

More and more commonly, the government prosecutes cases based upon “secret evidence” that they don’t show to the defendant … or sometimes even the judge hearing the case.

As just one example, government is “laundering” information gained through mass surveillance through other agencies, with an agreement that the agencies will “recreate” the evidence in a “parallel construction” … so the original source of the evidence is kept secret from the defendant, defense attorneys and the judge. A former top NSA official says that this is the opposite of following the Fourth Amendment, but is a “totalitarian process” which shows that we’re in a “police state”.

El Salvador Farmers Successfully Defy Monsanto

The perils of ingesting food that has any contact with a Monsanto-produced product are in the news on nearly a weekly basis.

As Dr. Jeff Ritterman has documented, Monstanto's herbicide, Roundup, has been linked to a fatal kidney disease epidemic, and has also been repeatedly linked to cancer.

Recently, a senior research scientist at MIT predicted that glyphosate, the key ingredient in Roundup, will cause half of all children to have autism by 2025.

Farmers in El Salvador are acutely aware of the importance of producing their own seeds, and avoiding those from the bioengineering giant. The farmers, who have already been consistently outperforming Monsanto with their seed, as the local seed is far healthier and more productive, have just managed to bring about a giant defeat of Monsanto by preventing it from supplying El Salvador with its seeds. Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture released a new round of contracts to provide seed to subsistence farmers across the country.

World War II myths fuel Western crimes

Freshman US Senator Tom Cotton already has two claims to fame. First he wrote a letter to Iran in an effort to sabotage his own President’s diplomatic efforts and start a war. And then he set an all-time record by invoking Hitler in less than one minute during his first Senate speech.

Sen. Cotton thus stands condemned under Godwin’s Law, which states that whoever mentions Hitler first automatically loses the debate. “Playing the Hitler card” is widely reviled. Yet people like Cotton cannot resist the temptation.

Why has the demonization of Hitler—and of anybody one wants to demonize through comparisons to Hitler—become such a massively overused, utterly shopworn cliché?

Recursive Lending Analysis: ‘Money’ is an invisible mathematical trap of perpetual debt

*hyperlinks live at source*

By guest author Paul Grignon, creator of the Money as Debt Trilogy viewed by tens of millions worldwide in 24 languages, and used by Advanced Placement Economics teachers to communicate how what we use for money is created as debt (my AP Econ assignment using Paul’s movie). Paul is an independent researcher, writer, visual artist, and movie creator.

Money created as a debt-of-itself is an elusive concept.  Put simply, most of our money is bank credit, mere numbers on a computer created by a borrower promising to pay the same numbers back to a bank, on a schedule. Logically, in order for it all to be paid back, it has to all remain available to be earned by the borrowers that created it.

Georgia ‘patriot’ reportedly planted pipe bombs in park to sow fear of Muslims

A 67-year-old Marietta, Georgia man is accused of planting a backpack containing two pipe bombs in an Atlanta-area public park in order to frighten the public and sow fear of Islamic terrorism.

According to Atlanta’s Channel 2 News, conservative “patriot” Michael Sibley confessed to police that he was trying to educate people that terror strikes can happen anywhere and without warning when he planted the bombs last November.

The backpack contained two partially-constructed pipe bombs, a Koran and a list of “soft targets” for terrorist attacks — i.e., non-military, unguarded structures like hospitals and schools. Among the list of potential targets was an Atlanta Jewish center.

Police watchdog to probe claims paedophile sergeant ordered junior officer to keep quiet after catching Cyril Smith with two boys at sex party

The police watchdog is to examine claims that a paedophile sergeant ordered a junior officer not to tell anyone after catching Cyril Smith at a sex party with two boys.

The account of the officer, then a young beat bobby but now retired, that he was threatened with the Official Secrets Act after he found the 29-stone Liberal MP at the home of a known sex offender in 1988 was the latest piece of evidence of an Establishment cover-up of Smith’s decades of abuse.

Yesterday the Independent Police Complaints Commission ( IPCC) announced it would be overseeing the investigation into the unnamed ex-officer’s claims.

Congress Wants to Eliminate Protections for Some of Your Most Sensitive Records

A November report from the Pew Research Center found that 82 percent of Americans consider location information gathered by their phones to be “sensitive” or “very sensitive,” and 75 percent feel that way about the numbers they have called or texted. But a forthcoming bill from Congress could dramatically reduce the security of that information—amid a number of high-profile data breaches.

The threat comes from a bill—scheduled to be introduced in the House this week—called (incongruously) the “Data Security and Breach Notification Act of 2015.” As I explained in testimony before the House of Representatives last week, counter to its name, this piece of legislation would actually eliminate key legal protections for phone, cable, and satellite records.

AT&T’s plan to watch your Web browsing—and what you can do about it

The personalized offers don't just appear on websites, they also come "via e-mail or through direct mail," AT&T says. If you are exploring a new home appliance at one retailer, you may be presented with similar appliance options from other retailers... if you search for a car online, you may receive an e-mail notifying you of a local dealership's sale."

You can't opt out from AT&T's e-mail spam without paying the higher price, so worried customers should make sure not to give AT&T a preferred e-mail address.

Ukraines's $3bn debt to Russia puts multibillion dollar IMF package at risk

Ukraine’s $3 billion debt to Russia could undermine the IMF’s four-year multibillion dollar bailout program. If the debt is considered official, it will breach the terms of providing financial assistance, said IMF spokesperson William Murray.

The Ukraine debt includes $3 billion in Eurobonds lent by Russia to the country’s previous government in December 2013. IMF rules say a bailout cannot be provided to a country if it defaulted on a loan from a state institution.

"We have a non-tolerance policy," William Murray told reporters at a news conference on Thursday, adding that Ukraine's debt to Russia should be considered state debt.

"If I'm not mistaken, the $3 billion Eurobond comes from the Russian sovereign wealth fund, so it's official debt," he said.

Israel says to release Palestinian tax funds

Move welcomed by the US which has been at odds with Israel over recent actions

Occupied Jerusalem: Israel said Friday it will release hundreds of millions of dollars in tax funds it has withheld from the Palestinian Authority as a punitive measure.

The United States swiftly welcomed the move, which could help disarm tensions with Washington and the international community after a polarising Israeli election campaign.

“We welcome the decision of the prime minister of Israel to release withheld tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority,” said US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke.

“This is an important step that will benefit the Palestinian people and will help stabilise the situation in the West Bank.”

A Lack of Clean Water and Sanitation in the Philippines Kills 55 People Every Day

Water contaminated by sewage is a serious issue in the Philippines. The country's National Sewerage and Septage Management Program (NSSMP) says around 55 people die every day in the country of nearly 100 million because more than 90 percent of the country's sewage is not collected or treated properly. Only 10 percent of the country's population has access to piped sewage systems; and the NSSMP says that many Filipinos who have toilets "do not have septic tanks; many septic tanks have open bottoms; and most septic tanks are not regularly desludged and the septage removed is not treated and disposed of properly."

Navy jets with extra fuel can’t be launched off new US carrier

The U.S. Navy’s top warplanes can’t be launched off its newest aircraft carrier if they’re carrying fuel tanks needed to extend their flight range, because the ship’s high-tech catapults cause too much wear.

Military weapons testers view this as a deficiency that would “preclude the Navy from conducting normal operations” on the USS Gerald R. Ford until it’s corrected, said Air Force Major Eric Badger, spokesman for the Pentagon’s testing office, in an email.

The previously undisclosed troubles with the catapult system from San Diego-based General Atomics add to shortcomings for the first in a new class of aircraft carriers being built by Newport News, Va.-based Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc.

Special ops troops using flawed intel software

Special operations troops heading to war zones are asking for commercial intelligence analysis software they say will help their missions. But their requests are languishing, and they are being ordered to use a flawed, in-house system preferred by the Pentagon, according to government records and interviews.

Over the last four months, six Army special operations units about to be deployed into Afghanistan, Iraq and other hostile environments have requested intelligence software made by Palantir, a Silicon Valley company that has synthesized data for the CIA, the Navy SEALs and the country's largest banks, among other government and private entities.

But just two of the requests have been approved, in both cases by the Army after members of Congress intervened with senior military leaders. Four other requests made through U.S. Army Special Operations Command in Fort Bragg, North Carolina have not been granted.

Wall Street bankers float idea of 'withholding campaign donations to Senate Democrats in symbolic protest'

Bankers at big Wall Street firms “have discussed withholding campaign donations to Senate Democrats in symbolic protest” of calls to break up the institutions, according to this story from Reuters.

The news service says representatives from Citigroup, JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Bank of America, have met to discuss ways to urge Democrats, including Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, “to soften their party's tone toward Wall Street, sources familiar with the discussions said this week.”

Bank officials said the idea of withholding donations “was not discussed at a meeting of the four banks in Washington but it has been raised in one-on-one conversations between representatives of some of them. However, there was no agreement on coordinating any action, and each bank is making its own decision, they said.”

In the District of Menace with the 3-headed Mad Dog in the Toilet Bowl.

We're on the verge of something. I don't know if anyone else is feeling what I am. Let me try to describe it. It is a giddy state of heightened sensitivity. It is uncomfortable now and again but... I am told it is always like this during the transitional stages; transitional stages of what? Aye... that's the question. It's difficult to process but... not as difficult as it was a couple of weeks ago (grin). I'm guessing this has less to do with the world situation than it does with a collective elevation in consciousness. We've talked about this before, these weird periods of high end resonance that feel like chaos to many and which I think are responsible for all kinds of unfortunate incidents world wide because a lot of people find it difficult to process them. I guess it is a lot like GHB. You get serious highway action that is attributed to something else and all kinds of fatal accidents, where the victim is unable to come back and tell you how he/she came to not be here anymore.

'Monsanto's Dream': Pro-GMO DARK Act Comes to Congress

The battle over genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, reached the U.S. capital on Wednesday when news broke that Kansas Republican Rep. Mike Pompeo will reintroduce a bill that blocks states from requiring GMO labeling.

The legislation, dubbed by critics the Deny Americans the Right-to-Know or DARK Act, grants the Secretary of Health and Human Services sole authority to mandate GMO labeling and sets forth particular standards for any label that contains claims that GMOs were or were not used in the production of the food— hampering any attempts by the Food and Drug Administration to pass legislation on the federal level.

Further, the bill preempts any local or state requirement and thus would overturn existing laws in Vermont, Connecticut and Maine, which critics say is a direct attack on state sovereignty. The bill was originally introduced under the last Congress.
