Donald Rumsfeld has ‘no idea’ if he paid taxes correctly

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeldis just as confused as the rest of the millions of Americans scrambling to file their taxes Tuesday.

“That I & most Americans have no idea whether our taxes are accurate tells us something,” Mr. Rumsfeld tweeted to his 76,000 followers, adding a link to his “annual letter to the #IRS.”

In the letter, Mr. Rumsfeld repeats that he has no idea if his tax payments have been accurate all these years, “despite the fact that I’m a college graduate.”

Fighting back against corporatocracy and Big Monopolies

"Freedom" and "democracy" are useful words, but very bankrupt: useful because they serve to advance imperial/corporate agendas, bankrupt because they are empty vessels perennially co-opted.

When illegal coups are orchestrated to overthrow democratically elected governments in Venezuela, Honduras, Ukraine or elsewhere, the lies of freedom and democracy are seamlessly attached to the criminal acts.

"Freedom" and "democracy" are still cloaking, tacitly or overtly, mass murder and genocide in Iraq, at this moment.

As long as the masses are fooled, conquest and regime change, not democracy and freedom, are enabled and perpetuated. Illegal coups and wars of aggression are about imperial control, setting up puppet dictators and the imposition of neoliberal economic business models for the corporate extensions of the invading nations.

French parliament bans genetically modified maize

France’s lower house of parliament passed a law Tuesday prohibiting genetically modified (GM) maize from being grown, citing environmental concerns. The law can be applied to any GM strain that is adopted at EU level.

The law follows a decree last month, which halted the planting of Monsanto’s insect-resistant maize MON810, which will be allowed for cultivation in the EU, Reuters reported.

But if any strain of GM crop is adopted in the future at EU level – including Pioneer 1507, which was developed by DuPont and Dow Chemical – it will be subsequently banned in France.

In an attempt to improve web security, Google may begin favoring encrypted sites in searches

According to Google engineer Matt Cutts, the company may begin ranking encrypted sites higher than their non-encrypted counterparts in its search engine results.

Cutts hinted at the potential tweak to Google's search algorithm at SMX West, a search and social media marketing conference in San Jose. Cutts says tweaking the algorithm to favor encrypted websites would make it more difficult for third parties to spy on users, while encouraging more and more sites to adopt a standard of encryption.

Galaxy S5?s fingerprint scanner has already been hacked, PayPal accounts at risk

When it comes to Samsung’s fingerprint scanner technology embedded in the home button on the new Galaxy S5, there’s good news and bad news. The good news is that we have spent plenty of time testing it, and we’ve found that it works very well. The bad news, however, is that it has apparently already been hacked, leaving Galaxy S5 owners’ devices and their PayPal accounts at risk.

As noted by German-language security blog H Security, SRLabs has posted video evidence that the fingerprint scanner on Samsung’s Galaxy S5 can easily be spoofed using a lifted print. In mere minutes, the group was able to create a “dummy finger” using an actual fingerprint to gain unauthorized access to the phone.

Scientists find multiple problems with GMOs

A February 2014 U.S. Department of Agriculture report declared what many scientists already knew: There are no significant differences in yields of GMO and non-GMO crops. When asked about the USDA report, the chief technology officer for Monsanto declared, "American farmers are smart and wouldn't [adopt] a technology that didn't have tangible benefits."

Are the USDA and scientists around the world wrong in their conclusion about failure to yield? No.

Agro-economists have shown repeatedly that the best-yielding, most-affordable crop varieties, to "feed the world", are those derived from conventional non-GMO hybrids (U.N Commission on Trade and Development).

CNN’s 9 Most Deplorable Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Moments

CNN's coverage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has reached such astounding stupidity in the past five weeks that it accomplished something previously unimaginable: uniting Bill O’Reilly and Rachel Maddow on the same side of an issue. Both cable news hosts think their counterparts at CNN should shut up about the missing plane — not that Jeff Zucker cares. CNN’s ratings are through the roof, and if it takes blind speculation or goofy props to maintain those numbers, then — dammit! — that’s what viewers will get. It's been 39 days since Flight 370 disappeared, and we still know little about what happened, but CNN keeps talking, and in doing so, embarrassing itself. Here are the network's worst moments:

The Obamacare Taxman Cometh (Again)

The latest and greatest Affordable Care Act revenue raisers include an excise tax on medical devices, an increase in the Medicare payroll tax from 2.8 to 3.8 percent for couples earning more than $250,000 annually, and limits on flexible spending accounts.

This chart from the Heritage Foundation is slightly older, so its totals aren't quite up to the minute, but it gives you an idea of the tax hikes included in the law, the dates they go into effect, and the amount of revenue they are expected to raise.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If there are these huge tax increases to pay for Obamacare, then why did the insurance rates skyrocket and the deductibles go through the roof?

Someone is making a ton of cash on this deal!

Why It's a Big Deal That Half of the Great Lakes Are Still Covered in Ice

Over the winter, as polar vortices plunged the U.S. Midwest into weeks of unceasing cold, the icy covers of the Great Lakes started to make headlines. With almost 96 percent of Lake Superior's 32,000 miles encased in ice at the season's peak, tens of thousands of tourists flocked to the ice caves along the Wisconsin shoreline, suddenly accessible after four years of relatively warmer wintery conditions.

The thing is, all of that ice takes a long time to melt. As of April 10, 48 percent of the five lakes' 90,000-plus square miles were still covered in ice, down from a high of 92.2 percent on March 6 (note that constituted the highest levels recorded since 1979, when ice covered 94.7 percent of the lakes). Last year, only 38.4 percent of the lakes froze over, while in 2012 just 12.9 percent did – part of a four-year stint of below-average iciness.

Going Postal: USPS Stocks Up On Guns and Ammo: “It Doesn’t Make a Whole Lot of Sense”

Conspiracy theories abound over the stockpiling of some two billion rounds of ammunition to date, leaving many wondering what the US government has in store for the American people.

Just last week, in the wake of the most recent Fort Hood shooting, mainstream media issued a report claiming that shooter Ivan Lopez was stockpiling weapons and ammo, when in fact he had purchased a single firearm and perhaps a few hundred rounds for it over a couple of visits to the gun store.

If his meager purchases are supposed to raise concerns with the American public and instill a sense of fear, then should we not be absolutely terrified of what our government is doing?

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." -- Fifth Amendment to the Constitution

Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 of the Constitution, known as the Enclave Clause, limits Federal Ownership of land only to land underneath Federal Government buildings and military bases. The Tenth Amendment prohibits the Federal Government from presuming a greater right to grab land for turtles, fracking, or other corporate endeavor.

Washington's Outrageous Ukraine Double Standards

The hypocrisy and double-standards of the US government's reaction to the protests are breath-taking.

After orchestrating and synchronizing protests and attacks by armed militants in Kiev to overthrow the elected government, US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday..."expressed strong concerns that attacks today by armed militants in eastern Ukraine were orchestrated and synchronized..."

When protesters in Kiev, with the support of US government regime changers like Victoria "Fu*k the EU" Nuland, overthrow a democratically-elected government, they are praised by John Kerry for "fighting for the right to associate with partners who will help them realize their aspirations."

Webmaster's Commentary:

The sense I get here is that the US government is slouching toward a war against Russia, which it cannot win for reasons I have articulated many times on this blog.

And why?!? Because war got the US government out of the financial messes it was in before World War I and II by going to war. And the financial mess in which the US government finds itself now, courtesy of really bad economic mismanagement by both the Federal Government and the Federal Reserve, are nothing short of spectacularly horrific.

But that was before Russia, China, India, Pakistan, the UK, Israel, and France all had nuclear weapons. So the game has changed mightily, but the mindset of US government, unfortunately, has not.

Coupled with the reality that the US military doesn't have the money, the troop strength, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to any war against any country, unless it is either not well militarily equipped (as was Iraq) or is militarily primitive (as is Afghanistan), a military scenario in the Ukraine against Russia is dangerous in the extreme; because the moment American military leadership realizes that they cannot win what is essentially a ground war from the air (which should have been the lesson learned from Vietnam), such a war will most likely go nuclear.

So I would very strongly caution those precious few adults in the room in the bowels of power in DC (particularly if they have kids and grandkids) to be extraordinarily careful about what they wish for as an outcome from such a war. The unintended consequences could be both horrific...and irreversible.

US Is an Oligarchy Not a Democracy, says Scientific Study

"Despite the seemingly strong empirical support in previous studies for theories of majoritarian democracy, our analyses suggest that majorities of the American public actually have little influence over the policies our government adopts. Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association, and a widespread (if still contested) franchise. But, ..." and then they go on to say, it's not true, and that, "America's claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened" by the findings in this, the first-ever comprehensive scientific study of the subject, which shows that there is instead "the nearly total failure of 'median voter' and other Majoritarian Electoral Democracy theories [of America].

Webmaster's Commentary:

The USA has a government of the money junkies, for the money junkies, and by the money junkies. We the People have absolutely no power over policies whatsoever.

We have a kabuki-like process of elections which mean absolutely nothing in terms of bettering the lives of working Americans; but at the end of the day, those who are ultimately vetted, then allowed to run, are simply tools of the oligarchs.

The only people who count to those who wind up elected, to any level of government, are those who fund election cycles in return for certain "favors" their businesses need.

And if you have a hard time wrapping your head around that, just remember what happened to the Patriot Act, where vaccine makers became held harmless and were indemnified against any actions by people who were injured by their vaccines.

Pretty sweet, isn't it; if you are a vaccine maker, of course. And the burden of proof is so intense that it is very rare that a case of injury ever makes it to the so-called vaccine court.

People dying, and getting maimed for life in wars, ultimately for private profit, do not matter in the greater scheme of things to those who rule, and are completely expendable. Please do remember that the next time this country is exhorted to the next war or wars, which will probably go at least as well as did the war in Iraq and Afghanistan for the people of the countries we are going to "liberate" next.

The older I get (and I turn 65 next month), the more viscerally Quaker I have become about war.

Having lived through Vietnam War, acutely remembering those of my college friends who didn't come back, or emotionally, didn't come back all the way, I see war as the lousiest possible option. Good faith negotiations, done with integrity, is always preferable to war.

And remember: it is never the children of the financially elite who get put in harm's way; it's always "other people's kids".

Putin to Obama: Use your influence to prevent bloodshed in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin urged his American counterpart on Monday to use the White House’s influence on the Ukrainian government to prevent further “bloodshed” from occurring in the country.

According to a statement released after the phone conversation by the Kremlin, Putin dismissed recent reports that peg Russia as being responsible for heated protests that have erupted in eastern Ukraine, where pro-Russian activists have successfully managed to seize a number of local government buildings and police stations.

“In response to the president of the United States’ expressed concern about Russia’s supposed meddling in southeastern Ukraine, the president of Russia noted that such speculations are based on inaccurate information,” the press statement read.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Just because a war with Russia over the situation in the Ukraine would be the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly counter-productive thing the US government could do is, unfortunately, absolutely no guarantee that the US government will not do it.

And I would like to politely remind those few adults in the room in the bowels of power in DC that the US military, at this point in its history, doesn't have the money, the troop strength, or the manufacturing to insure a positive outcome to a CONVENTIONAL war against Russia; and this is what makes the military scenario here so scarily dangerous.

CIA caught red handed in Ukraine

The three-ring diplomatic circus in Ukraine continues to entertain, even if sadly so. The White House found itself having to backtrack on the CIA's denial that Director Brennan was not in Kiev over the weekend and his visit had no connection with the military crackdown ordered against East Ukraine during that time. It was a special moment.

Let us count the mistakes here. First, the Russians put the coup-deposed President Yanukovich out on point with the story about Brennan's visit, which they would not have been so stupid to do if it were not true. Validation was coming in quickly anyway, as Brennan had met with a good number of senior coup members and the top security people.

Keeping the visit secret with that many in the loop was impossible.

Police begin spying on every citizen in real-time

A retired Air Force veteran named Ross McNutt and his Ohio-based company, Persistent Surveillance Systems, persuaded the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to use his surveillance technology to monitor Compton’s streets from the air and track suspects from the moment the snatching occurred.

The system, known as wide-area surveillance, is something of a time machine – the entire city is filmed and recorded in real time. Imagine Google Earth with a rewind button and the ability to play back the movement of cars and people as they scurry about the city.

“We literally watched all of Compton during the time that we were flying, so we could zoom in anywhere within the city of Compton and follow cars and see people,” McNutt said. “Our goal was to basically jump to where reported crimes occurred and see what information we could generate that would help investigators solve the crimes.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

The short answer is, such surveillance, even against the most innocent of American people, will not end, either soon...or peacefully.

FBI Visiting Gun Shops to Investigate Sovereigns and "People talking about Big Government"

Brandon Turbeville

In keeping with the tradition of the FBI’s position on gun rights, it appears the Bureau is working overdrive to monitor and harass gun owners and the gun shops that sell to them.

While government surveillance of gun purchases and gun owners is nothing new, a recent visit by an FBI Counterterrorism agent to a Columbia, South Carolina gun shop has only reinforced the knowledge that the U.S. government is growing more and more concerned by the prospect of a well-armed populace – particularly one that prefers to live without constant government interference in their personal lives...

Bacteria that can cause deadly 'flesh-eating' infections evolved in just 35 years, researchers have discovered.

Researchers say the bacteria known as Group A Streptococcus underwent four major genetic changes as it transformed into the type that causes the life-threatening disease called necrotizing fasciitis.

These bacteria appeared to have affected humans since the 1980s, and researchers have previously been unable to work out why they developed so quickly.

Close the Billionaire Tax Loophole

If our leaders want to balance the budget, here’s a suggestion: Congress can scrap a new “Paris Hilton” giveaway that’s draining billions of federal tax dollars.

This giveaway takes the form of a complex tax loophole designed to circumvent the federal estate tax, one of the few ways a democratic society can reduce extreme wealth inequality.

The estate tax is a levy on inheritances that multi-millionaires and billionaires leave behind when they pass away. It affects only the wealthiest two out of every thousand U.S. taxpayers — individuals with at least $5.34 million to their name, or $10.68 million for a couple.

Europe having cold feet on sanctions

The United States is working to convince a reluctant Europe of the need to punish Russia more severely for its meddling in Ukraine while at the same time warning Moscow to step back or take more financial hits.

It's a difficult balancing act for Europe, which wants to make Russia pay for its aggression but fears the economic turmoil from the fallout of new, harsher trade sanctions by the West. Europe is Russia's largest trading partner and therefore has huge sway over Russia's shaky economy.

Economists say the U.S. risks appearing weak without support from Europe. But Europe is far from ready to levy penalties against Moscow that would undercut its own financial stability and possibly endanger its main source of energy.

BOSTON WRONG

I work at a group home.

And I recall one of the residents a while back watching the Jodi Arias trial on the TV, so we saw hours and hours of detailed examination of that murder case.

If we had a real press, we would get that sort of nuanced, enthusiastic, full-blown coverage and discussion of the Boston bombing, the Sandy Hook case, 911, the anthrax scare, the RFK, MLK and JFK murders, not to mention Waco and Oklahoma City, and this would not be a nation headed full-speed down hill with the brakes blown, toward fascism.

Tony Blair, George W. Bush and David Cameron: Hi-jacking God?

When Tony Blair was in residence, according to the diaries of his former communications director, Alastair Campbell, before the illegal invasion of Iraq, for which Blair's Downing Street offices produced fantasy, fictional, false justifications, the then Prime Minister was guided by his faith and regularly spoke to "his Maker." Blair may have "spoken" - but, as ever, he clearly didn't listen.

Proverbs (6:16-19) rules on six personality traits his "Maker" abhors and seven that are an abomination to Him: "Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord ..." Blair ticks every box, shattering any claim to his trumpeted Christian principles.

False witness is also slammed by King Solomon and in Matthew (15:18-20) Jesus condemns false testimony as defiling to any person.

DNR Burn Damages Barn Buildings & Nearby Properties

A controlled burn got out of hand in Benton County on Friday, causing damage to properties nearby.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said its team started the burn on land near Vinton.

With dry, windy conditions, authorities put several burn bans in place across the state last week. The DNR decided to conduct a controlled burn in Benton County, anyway. According to the Department of Public Safety’s website, Benton County did not have a ban at the time.

The flames got out of control and the DNR said the fire spread to three nearby properties. The department is conducting an investigation, looking into what happened. Authorities are also working to get compensation for those who were impacted by the fire.

The End Of The Great American Fantasy

Through all of my life there has been an odd and persistent bias on the part of otherwise honest Americans:

What America does overseas is always good and right. We do not speak against it.

The protests against the Vietnam War were an exception to this, of course, but that break from tradition involved less than half the country. Those people were quickly brought back into the mainstream, And they have supported more or less all subsequent US wars.

This belief – that US foreign actions are always good – is falling apart as we watch. I take this as a good thing, as one should not believe in Santa Claus forever.

Oligarchy, not democracy: Americans have ‘near-zero’ input on policy – report

The first-ever scientific study that analyzes whether the US is a democracy, rather than an oligarchy, found the majority of the American public has a “minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy” compared to the wealthy.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is called (especially today) "Taxation without representation" and I was taught in grade school that this is a good reason to fire the government.

This actually happened: IRS sent a FIVE YEAR OLD BOY a letter about his taxes, his response is hilarious

They say taxes are a certainty of life, although that isn’t true for most 5 year-olds. However, there’s one little boy who must file an individual tax return for a variety of reasons. So when he received a letter from the IRS questioning several items on his most recent return, his mother naturally responded for him. She received this in return (regarding her 5 year-old son):

“Dear Mr. Smith: we don’t recognize Susan F. Smith as someone authorized to discuss your tax file. If you want Susan F. Smith to be authorized to discuss your return we suggest you go online and submit form 8892 and form, etc.” Since the government already had the little boy’s Social Security Number and knew he was a minor, his parents were perplexed. So, they naturally decided that he should write the IRS himself. This is his letter.

U.S. fears Afghan services may be cut as corruption sharply reduces customs taxes

U.S. officials are deeply concerned that corruption is reducing Afghanistan’s collection of customs taxes by as much as half, shorting the country’s primary source of revenue and raising concerns that the government may need to cut critical services in order to close budget shortfalls.

RON PAUL TARGETED BY THE IRS - Ron Paul: The toughest letter I’ve ever had to send

For years, people have joked that the three most feared letters in the English language may well be these . . .

I – R – S.

But today, I’m not laughing.

Just days ago, the IRS handed Campaign for Liberty a hefty fine and DEMANDED we turn over sensitive contributor information.

Sick of Internet comments? Us, too – here’s what we’re doing about it

Starting this weekend, the Chicago Sun-Times and the other titles in the Sun-Times Media group will temporarily cease to run comments with our articles.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What is going on is that the comments challenge the content of the story and contradict much of the propaganda. A good example is yesterday and my comment to the NBC affiliate on Harry Reid's claim that the law was on his side in the Bundy dispute, which was erased from the comments to that article although referred to by one of the other comments. So, the corporate media wants to back out of allowing comments, and is selling the move as something the public wants. We can;t actually know that of course, because comments are blocked on this article about ending comments.

Would You Trust the NSA’s Advice on How to Deal with Heartbleed?

Somewhat late to the game (by about a week), after the Heartbleed vulnerability was publicly revealed, and a few days after it was reported and denied that the NSA was already well aware of Heartbleed and exploiting it, the NSA has put out a one page PDF about Heartbleed. This seems like something of a too little, too late effort by the NSA to live up to its semi-promise of a “bias” towards revealing vulnerabilities over exploiting them. However, that leads to the simple question that plenty of people should be asking: given everything you’ve learned about the NSA recently (or, well, for years), would you trust the NSA‘s advice on how to deal with Heartbleed? Not that I think the NSA would publicly suggest anything bad, but at this point, the NSA has a serious trust problem in convincing anyone engaged in computer security that they have their best interests in mind.

CO Couple Fight Corrupt Govt Land Grab (Video)

April 8, 2014~ A Colorado couple is fighting an eminent domain push to save their land.

Andy and Ceil Barrie's cabin is surrounded by the White River National Forest. The forest service didn't like the couple using their snow vehicle to get to their cabin, which was built in the late 1800s.

The Barries asked Summit County to declare their path a county road. Instead, the county claimed their cabin by saying it needed the land to protect open space...

A look inside a 'Cybersquat'

Major software innovations do not all come from big companies like Apple or Google.

A surprising number of developers eschew the gleaming campuses of Silicon Valley, choosing an alternative lifestyle coding in so-called communal "cybersquats" around the world.

What the Proposed NSA Reforms Wouldn’t Do

Ten months after Edward Snowden’s first disclosures, three main legislative proposals have emerged for surveillance reform: one from President Obama, one from the House Intelligence Committee, and one proposal favored by civil libertarians.

America's Great Leap Toward Global Tyranny

The darkness to which I refer is something largely unanticipated in political studies and even in science fiction, a field which definitely enters this discussion, as readers will see. There have been many examples of national tyrannies and even stories of global autocracies, but the Hitler-Stalin-Mussolini type of tyranny is an antiquated model for advanced states despite its applying still to many third-world places. A unique set of circumstances now works towards a dystopian future in advanced states with no need for jackboots or brutal faces on posters.
