Afghan retreat echoes of Vietnam defeat

The “exceptional” Americans in Washington like to refer to their foreign interventions as “nation building.” Like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, among dozens of other unfortunate countries to have hosted American “nation builders” over the past century, the people of these wretched lands have experienced Washington’s reverse Midas Touch. Far from turning to gold, everything Washington touches brings death and destruction.

It didn’t quite garner the same media highlight, but nevertheless there was the unmistakable comparison this week between the evacuation of American troops from southern Afghanistan and the Fall of Saigon, South Vietnam, in 1975.

US beginning to ‘disengage’ from Israel: Analyst

A combination of factors is pushing the United States to “disengage” from Israel, a regime that will not last a month without US support, says an analyst.

“Times are changing for Israel, they spend a lot of money to manipulate public opinion, all of Hollywood and mass media is Jewish-controlled (and) Zionist-controlled, and people realize the lies that are being told to them on their Nightly News on a daily basis,” he said.

“But the American people can see through this. The American people, particularly at university level, are smart (and) well-educated and they have this implicit sense of fairness,” he added.
“All of this combined” Harris said, “is adding up to what is going to be a perfect storm for Israel where the people of the US are going to reject Israel, and that is the process that we are beginning to see the early stages of.”

Iraq divided: The fight against ISIL

As the US strikes ISIL targets in Iraq, we report from Erbil on the consequences of the latest foreign intervention.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) today controls as much as one-third of Iraq’s territory, including the second largest city, Mosul.

Although the group’s power and influence expanded in Syria, Iraq is where it was born during the nearly nine-year-long US occupation of the country.
Thus far, tens of thousands of people have had to flee their homes as ISIL captures towns and villages.

ISIL-held territory is tightly controlled, off-limits to even journalists and human rights workers.

As the US steps up its air campaign against the group, Fault Lines travels some 900km across Iraq to look at the consequences of the fight against ISIL.

Whitlam and Australia’s forgotten coup

John Pilger marks the death of former Australian prime minister Gough Whitlam with the one story missing from the ‘tributes’ to a man whose extraordinary political demise is one of America’s dirtiest secrets.

Across the political and media elite in Australia, a silence has descended on the memory of the great, reforming prime minister Gough Whitlam, who has died. His achievements are recognized, if grudgingly, his mistakes noted in false sorrow. But a critical reason for his extraordinary political demise will, they hope, be buried with him.

Is Latin America’s ‘Pink Tide’ Ebbing?

Many in Official Washington still consider Latin America their “backyard,” a place where U.S. interests rule and where leftist and reformist governments have historically faced “regime change” tactics. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation:

“Ukraine needs a government that will think how the nation should regain unity. It needs a government to guarantee an equal status to all Ukrainian citizens irrespective of the language they speak and political convictions they have.”– Sergey Lavrov

Question: Ukraine has just held parliamentary elections. Does Moscow recognize them?

Sergey Lavrov: The elections are being monitored by observers, including OSCE observers, and there are Russian representatives among them. This time, Russia’s Federal Assembly did not send a separate observer team to the elections, so we will wait for the conclusions of the international OSCE team.

CIA Mouthpiece Lets Slip On Russian ‘Aggression’

For months now, Western mass media have been in lockstep with the US State Department and the NATO military alliance, promulgating claims of Russian aggression in Ukraine and towards Europe generally. The mantra-like repetition of these claims, with scant substantiation, resembles the Big Lie technique of Third Reich master propagandist Josef Goebbels. Told often and brazenly enough, the claims acquire normalcy as «accepted facts».

Western news media, from the BBC to the New York Times, uncritically peddle NATO and Washington claims that Moscow has «annexed» Crimea and infiltrated troops into eastern Ukraine to destabilize the pro-Western «government» in Kiev. Last month at the NATO summit in Wales, outgoing secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen asserted: «So we continue to call on Russia to pull back its troops from Ukrainian borders, [and] to stop the flow of weapons and fighters into Ukraine».

The Special Interest Problem

Like those with a strong addiction, these politicians seem unable to free themselves from the monkey on their back.

If the politician defies the lobby making the offer (a rare event but not unheard of), that special interest will throw its support to the defiant politician’s electoral opponent. The result is that most politicians are in lockstep with the demands of multiple powerful special interests.

If there is a way out of this dilemma it must come from the general public. The long-standing dissatisfaction with politicians, especially on the national level, must be channeled into a popular campaign to free the legislators and policy makers from the influence of narrow interests.

Re-elected Dilma wins in a Brazil broken in two

And the loser is…neoliberalism

As for Washington/Wall Street, the Empire of Chaos is certainly not happy – and that’s a major euphemism, especially after betting on the wrong horse, Marina Silva, a sort of Amazon rainforest-born female counterpart to Obama’s “change we can believe in.” The fact is, as much as the Brazilian model of income distribution is against the interests of big business, Brazilian foreign policy is now diametrically opposed to Washington’s.

Thanks for Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan

Thank You for Your Valor, Thank You for Your Service, Thank You, Thank You, Thank You… Still on the Thank-You Tour-of-Duty Circuit, 13 Years Later

Though I couldn’t quite say why, that Concert for Valor ad felt tired and sad, despite the images of Rihanna singing full-throated into a gold microphone and James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett of Metallica wailing away on their guitars. I had gotten my own share of “thanks” from civilians when I was still a U.S. Army Ranger. Who hadn’t? It had been the endless theme of the post-9/11 era, how thankful other Americans were that we would do… well, what exactly, for them? And here it was again. I couldn’t help wondering: Would veterans somewhere actually feel the gratitude that Starbucks and HBO hoped to convey?

Treating Putin Like a Lunatic when He makes Sense

Official Washington treats whatever comes out of Russian President Putin’s mouth as the ravings of a lunatic, even when what he says is obviously true or otherwise makes sense, as the New York Times has demonstrated again.

Rationality and realism seem to have lost any place in the workings of the mainstream U.S. news media.

When reading the New York Times on many foreign policy issues, it doesn’t take a savant to figure out what the newspaper’s bias is. Anything, for instance, relating to Russian President Vladimir Putin drips of contempt and hostility.

US lawlessness fuels global insecurity

In an insightful geopolitical speech this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the US of instigating global instability and insecurity.

All in all, President Putin is right. The world has become a fearful, nervous place seemingly on a hair-trigger for over-reaction and irrational panic. This state of insecurity has, as Putin says, been brought on by years of lawless conduct by the US and its Western allies. The criminal wars of Iraq and Afghanistan – with millions of innocent victims – have multiplied and mutated into more and more illegal interventions and malignancies, such as the extremist ISIL network that is destabilizing Syria and the wider Middle East region.

Suspicious Death of Journalist Serena Shim: Hypocritical Western Media Remains Silent

The suspicious death of US-born journalist Serena Shim, and the deafening silence on the story in the US, is merely the latest example of the blatant double standard employed by the Western media.

Shim, a 29 year old American journalist of Lebanese descent, had been covering the ongoing war in Syria, specifically the current battle between ISIS militants and Kurdish forces near the Syrian town of Kobani, from the Turkish-Syrian border. Shim was traveling in a rental car back to her hotel after reporting from the Turkish town of Suruc near the Syrian border, when the car was allegedly struck by a heavy vehicle, killing Shim.

Kiev Elections Can’t Sanitise State of Mob Rule

In the paraphrased words of Abraham Lincoln, no electoral process can sanitize the glaring fact of Kiev’s rule of the mob, by the mob, for the mob.

The Kiev regime’s parliamentary elections this weekend are set to go ahead amid an atmosphere of rampant political street violence and intimidation – and that’s not in the war-torn eastern part of Ukraine. Poroshenko denies the bitter reality of violence that has engulfed all of Ukraine under the Western-sponsored regime change operation in his country.

The parliamentary elections were called in June by the then elected President Petro Poroshenko as a way of legitimizing the illegal coup against the Ukrainian government that occurred four months previously with the support of the American Central Intelligence Agency.

Political parties that might have been considered in alliance because of their support for the coup against the Ukrainian government in February are now being caught up in an anarchic state of hoodlum vendettas.

“The sobering up of the Ukrainians will be harsh and painful” -- Nikolay Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council.

And he also gave an assessment of the role of the United States and NATO in the events in eastern Ukraine, explained why these events are a continuation of Zbigniew Brzezinski’s plan for the disintegration of the USSR and Russia, and assessed prospects for the development of the multipolar world and the possibility of a future struggle for hydrocarbon resources.

Western Sponsors Liable for Kiev Basket Case

Washington is even more circumspect than Brussels on the matter of providing hard cash to Kiev, as opposed to lots of hot-air promises of nebulous aid. One gets the feeling that the Western sponsors know full well that this regime is a basket case. Nevertheless, these Western sponsors are liable for the basket case that they created.

Since Washington and Brussels shunted the geopolitical tracks in the first place to create the financial train wreck that is now manifestly the Ukraine, you would think that there might be a sense of obligation on Western governments to salvage the mess. Not a bit of it, it seems.

Furthermore, the train wreck is careening dangerously into the Russian economy. But still, the Western governments adopt an attitude that Moscow must pay for the damages.

The activities of non-government organizations are not restricted in any way; their members have close ties with US embassy and consulate staff, as well as USAID workers. The human intelligence is used to discredit the policy of the Dilma Rousseff government. The lies about its ineffectiveness are spread around by all available means. «Experts» forecast collapse in case the President wins another term. They disseminate dubious results of «rating polls» that complicate the vision of reality.

Over two thousand Brazilian political activists, intellectuals, people of art and culture signed a manifest on October 26 highlighting the hostile actions of Washington aimed at prevention of Dilma Rousseff election victory.

Philip Giraldi: Stopping Cyber Hate

ADL has recently been meeting in California with a British group called the Inter-Parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism, which included the Community Security Trust (CST). The CST advocates physical response to anti-Semitic incidents, to include the equipping and training of organized “self-defense” forces. CST is controversial in the UK, partly because many British Jews believe they are adequately protected by the police. It has also been criticized because its Director is the highest paid head of any Jewish organization in the country and its finances are alleged to be non-transparent.

An article entitled “Web giants unite to fight online hate” described the purpose of the California meeting. It reported that a “game changing” agreement was reached with Twitter, Facebook, Google and Microsoft to take steps to stop “the proliferation of racist and abusive comments” and to “force racism and hatred from the web.”

Soros and the CIA Now Banking on Neves to Defeat Rousseff

President Rousseff’s policies have created powerful enemies within the walls of the CIA in Langley, Virginia and among the board rooms of Wall Street and the West’s most powerful corporations. She succeeded in proving the polls and pundits wrong on October 5 but October 26 remains yet another hurdle.

Neves’s chief economic adviser and the man who would become Finance Minister in a Neves presidency is Arminio Fraga Neto. A former close friend and associate of Soros and his Quantum hedge fund.

Israel is losing its friends in the world

Israel has lost its international audience. When Netanyahu warns about the nuclear threat from Iran, even those who worry deeply about Tehran’s intentions respond with a weary shrug. The warnings are seen as a diversion — an effort to distract from his refusal to accept a Palestinian state rather than a clear-headed assessment of a present danger. This cannot be good for Israel.

Such was the backdrop to last week’s vote in the House of Commons. The occasion added lustre to the reputation of the politicians — something too rare these days. The hyperbole and rancour of everyday partisanship made way for reasoned argument. Israel had lobbied hard against the motion. It was soon obvious it had lost its best friends.

Washington Admits: FSA Equals Fictitious Syrian Army

US President Barack Obama hosted a top-level war council this past week in Washington with the military leaders from 21 countries in attendance – under the official remit of coordinating tactics to defeat the Islamic State extremist group in Syria and Iraq.

Hold on a minute. Congress has approved $500 million to train a new cohort of the supposedly moderate and secular Free Syrian Army; and Saudi Arabia and Turkey are providing bases for that undertaking. But at Obama’s seminal war council on «coordinating» plans there was not one representative from the much-vaunted moderate rebels who are assigned this crucial military role.

Illan Pappe & Miko Peled on Zionist Israel

Below are a couple of compelling presentations by brave and bold, historian Illan Pappe, and peace activist Miko Peled respectively.

I salute both men, for having the courage to move outside the Zionist narrative they grew up on, to stand up when their principles called for it, to give us an honest appraisal of where Israel as a society stands today, which most Israelis would prefer to remain in denial of, because, to acknowledge the truth, would destroy all of their sustaining myths and leave them bereft of all of the lies which have sustained and justified their existence.

Miko is absolutely right in his disclaimer, of course… you cannot expect a balance presentation on this topic, because the issue itself is not balanced. There is no balance therefore there cannot be a balanced presentation on this topic, Miko correctly reiterates.

Israel Losing Support In UK Says Ambassador

‘Britain’s ambassador to Israel has warned that the Jewish state is losing support in the UK, blaming the summer offensive in Gaza and increased settlement construction in the Occupied West Bank. His remarks came as a former Conservative minister described the situation in one Palestinian city as “apartheid”.

The ambassador, Matthew Gould, issued the warning hours after MPs backed a motion to recognize the state of Palestine, albeit in a non-binding vote. Speaking to Israel Radio, the ambassador said the vote in the Commons showed that public sentiment was moving away from Israel.’

Big things sometimes happen innocuously in politics.

Reading the transcript of Russian Foreign MInister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with Channel Five in Moscow a fortnight ago, one did feel intrigued that almost innocuously, after some scathing criticism of the West’s containment policies toward Moscow, Lavrov switched tack abruptly, toward the end, with some loud thinking that there could still be “something else like reset No. 2 or reset 2.0? between Russia and the US. He left the intriguing thought hanging in the air.

What is Zionism?

- its history and role over the past 150 years

Today, Zionism has become the most dominant ideology in the western world and is the most significant expression of Anglo-American imperialism, and reached a new stage by ”Project for a New American Century”.

Zionism is, according to its own prominent figures, a religious/political movement the aim of which is to create a socialistic model state for Jews in the land of Palestine where Mount Zion is located. Its roots are found in Judaism and in the middle of the nineteenth century Moses Hess, Karl Marx’s mentor in socialism, developed it into a political movement.

New Horizon Conference: Meeting of Minds in Tehran

The 2nd conference “New Horizon: the International Conference of Independent Thinkers” was held in Tehran, September 29–October 1 2014, including over 30 journalists, writers and academics from around the world presenting papers and arguing issues of world geopolitics, with a focus on the Middle East.

Contrary to the shrill cries in the western media that the conference was anti-Semitic, it was unique in my experience in addressing Zionism and US imperialism forthrightly and intelligently, without a hint of racism. The issue of anti-Semitism was addressed and dismissed, as “There is no issue with Jewish people or the Jewish religion,” explained Darya-Bandari, “but rather with Zionism, that secular distortion of Judaism that itself is racist, and has been used as a pretext to dispossess and kill Palestinians.”

Pepe Escobar: What’s the deal between Iran and the US?

I’ve just spent a frantic week in Tehran as a guest of the New Horizon conference of Independent Thinkers. Here is some of what I’ve witnessed.
Three overarching themes monopolize all important discussions in Tehran at this critical historical juncture:

1) the real possibility of a nuclear deal with the P5+1 on November 24;
2) the end of sanctions and the possibility of Iran soon starting to supply the EU with loads of natural gas;
3) the fight against ISIS/ISIL, which Iranians, as much as the Arab street, refer to as Daesh.

I was quite moved by the profound respect shown to Gareth’s investigative work in Tehran, in contrast to the thunderous wall of silence that greeted his book in the US. Call it yet another reflection of the 35-year old “wilderness of mirrors” – or Wall of Mistrust – opposing Washington to Tehran.

The idea of Israel is changing in the minds of its allies. It is no longer a cause. It is becoming heavy baggage.

This is not the effect of a larger Muslim community. All Britons today are more likely to be aware of the 14,000 settlements Israel approved during its nine month peace talks with the Palestinians; to wonder where a Palestinian state is going to go , with more than 600,000 settlers in occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank; to acknowledge the insouciant racism of Israeli discourse about non-Jews; to recoil at the cost in Palestinian civilian lives of Israel’s definition of its own security.

Is Obama Being Threatened by US Hawks with ‘Security Risks’?

Is there something more significant to the rash of disclosures than mere incompetence among the president’s security detail? Are powerful people within the US government perhaps trying to send Obama a grim warning?

We should bear in mind that the US-led military intervention in Iraq and Syria and the growing confrontation with Russia over Ukraine seem to have entered a critical phase. The US military-industrial complex is pushing for a full-scale and relentless intervention in the Middle East, as well as ever-increasing tensions over Ukraine by goading the reactionary Kiev regime into antagonizing Russia.

Toxic pesticide sprayed on GMO crops – chlorpyrifos – is harming children in Kaua'i, according to experts

The ghost in the GMO machine
by Paul Koberstein

While independent research shows that chlorpyrifos, a Dow Chemical insecticide used in Kaua‘i's GMO fields, can cause significant harm to children nearby, Dow is intent on convincing the EPA otherwise

The bodies and minds of children living on the Hawaiian island of Kaua‘i are being threatened by exposure to chlorpyrifos, a synthetic insecticide that is heavily sprayed on fields located near their homes and schools.

For decades, researchers have been publishing reports about children who died or were maimed after exposure to chlorpyrifos, either in the womb or after birth. While chlorpyrifos can no longer legally be used around the house or in the garden, it is still legal to use on the farm. But researchers are finding that children aren't safe when the insecticide is applied to nearby fields.

Protests Disrupt Telescope Groundbreaking In Hawaii

During the project's groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, which was webcast on Thirty Meter Telescope's official website, yelling could be heard in the background of the blessing.

Stephanie Nagata, director of the Office of Mauna Kea Management, told The Associated Press that several dozen protesters even blocked the roads to the telescope, prevented a caravan of vehicles from taking visitors, which included dignitaries from around the world, to the event. But the protest group denied they had blocked any traffic, pointing instead to the police.

"They laid down the road right there," said Kealoha Pisciotta, who was with the group Mauna Kea Anaina Hou. "That's what stopped the caravan." Pisciotta also said her group didn't intend to stop the blessing and later apologized for interrupting it. "We said aloha to each other and we hugged."

No Ebola, Says Hawaii Health Department

The Hawaii State Department of Health (DOH) has determined that the individual in isolation at a Honolulu hospital who was reported to the department as a possible Ebola case yesterday does not meet the criteria for testing. The individual is no longer under evaluation for possible Ebola infection.

“The hospital acted in the best interests of the community, with an abundance of caution,” said Health Director Dr. Linda Rosen. “We commend the facility for being prepared and remaining vigilant regarding the risk of Ebola. After investigation by the health department, it was determined that the individual did not meet the clinical or travel exposure criteria for an Ebola infection.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

So ... basically they are saying they are not going to bother testing him. I would frankly feel better if they had gone ahead with the test and had it come back negative.

Frankly, this feels like pure political bovine excrement to protect Hawaii's tourism industry. The first reports on this patient indicated that his doctors felt he met the criteria, including travel.

And, claiming that he has not traveled to Ebola infected areas assumes one knows all the places where Ebola is right now, which is impossible. Prior to the first of this week, one would not have seen Dallas or Brussels on the list of locations where Ebola infection is possible.

Now it is being reported that Thomas Duncan lied to authorities in Liberia to board the aircraft, denying he had come in contact with an Ebola patient. The Hawaii State Department of Health is betting the lives of our citizens that the patient at Queen's has been fully truthful.

The Blue Angels dazzle during air show demos

Even with a public address announcer describing in detail each upcoming formation and maneuver, many among the sun-baked crowd at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam couldn't help but gasp, flinch, even duck as a sextet of powerful F/A-18 Hornet supersonic combat jets aligned themselves in tight diamond formation, screamed past one another upside down, and executed other stunning feats of precision flying.

Hawaii is not legally a state!

It is easy to find the courage necessary to support a moral position if that position benefits oneself. True moral courage, however, is proven when one chooses to support that which is morally and ethically right even when such a position is to one's one detriment.

The people of the United States find themselves in such a position right now, forced to choose between a moral and ethical position that carries with it the potential for "inconvenience", or supporting the status quo and having to admit to themselves that they are not the champions of justice they imagine themselves to be. By the end of this article, you will know for yourself which one you are.

Most folks have heard that Hawaii is a state, one of the United States of America. Most people, including those who live in Hawaii, accept that statement as a fact.

Kilauea lava flow advances toward populated areas, Hawaii

Hawaii issued a state of emergency for its Kilauea Volcano on September 4, 2014. As the lava flow that started during the June 27th eruption continues to advance toward populated areas residents are urged to finalize their evacuation plans.

Potentially-lethal concentrations of sulfur dioxide gas may be present within 1 km downwind of vent areas. Department of Health warned residents in smoke affected areas to stay indoors and limit physical activities.

Honolulu city officials vote to transfer homeless to former WWII internment camp

In a move that reeks of inhumanity and cruelty, the Honolulu, Hawaii city council approved several measures last week that criminalize the homeless population including an ordinance that bans sleeping or lying down on sidewalks. More ominously, plans are being made to transfer 100 of the most “chronic” homeless from Waikiki, the world famous tourist destination, to Sand Island, home to a former World War II internment camp for Japanese-Americans, wastewater treatment plant and former dump. During the early 1900’s, the island was also used as a quarantine station for immigrants.

Lawsuit Seeks to Remove GMO Voter Initiative From Maui County Ballot

A group of Maui County residents and organizations are suing in an attempt to stop a county voter initiative to ban GMO farming from appearing on the November ballot.

The Molokai Chamber of Commerce and a group called Citizens Against the Maui County Farming Ban filed the lawsuit on Friday in 2nd Circuit Court along with seven individuals.

The defendants include Maui County Clerk Danny Mateo and Hawaii Office of Elections Chief Scott Nago. Rex Quidilla, spokesman for the state Office of Elections, said the agency had no comment on pending litigation. Mateo could not be reached for comment.

Federal Judge: Kauai's GMO Law Is Invalid

A Kauai County law requiring companies to disclose their use of pesticides and genetically modified crops is invalid, a federal judge ruled Monday.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren ruled in favor of four seed companies seeking to stop Kauai's new law from going into effect in October.

Syngenta Seeds, DuPont Pioneer, Agrigenetics Inc., doing business as Dow AgroSciences, and BASF Plant Sciences sued for a permanent injunction, arguing the ordinance unfairly targets their industry.

Kurren's ruling agrees that the ordinance is pre-empted by state law. The judge's ruling stops the county from enforcing the ordinance.

Tropical Storm KARINA

NHC tropical cyclone forecast tracks can be in error. This forecast uncertainty is conveyed by the track forecast "cone", the solid white and stippled white areas in the graphic. The solid white area depicts the track forecast uncertainty for days 1-3 of the forecast, while the stippled area depicts the uncertainty on days 4-5. Historical data indicate that the entire 5-day path of the center of the tropical cyclone will remain within the cone about 60-70% of the time. To form the cone, a set of imaginary circles are placed along the forecast track at the 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h positions, where the size of each circle is set so that it encloses 67% of the previous five years official forecast errors. The cone is then formed by smoothly connecting the area swept out by the set of circles.

Hawaii is not legally a state!

Most folks have heard that Hawaii is a state, one of the United States of America. Most people, including those who live in Hawaii, accept that statement as a fact.

But the reality is that in a world in which nations are as bound by the rule of laws as are the citizens of nations (if not more so), the truth is quite different!

The truth is that each and every step along Hawaii's path from sovereign and independent nation, to annexed territory, to state, was done in violation of laws and treaties then in effect, without regard to the wishes of the Hawaiian people. Many people, including President Grover Cleveland, opposed the annexation of Hawaii.

Biotech firms sue local Hawaii government for protecting citizens and environment from GMOs

The lawsuit, driven largely by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the world's largest trade association for the biotech industry representing companies like Monsanto, seeks to dissolve the county's 2013 ordinance to open the island up for the expansion of genetically engineered crop production. These herbicide resistant crops result in intensive pesticide use, which threatens public health, contaminates water, and harms wildlife and neighboring crops. Most GE crops also threaten transgenic contamination of non-GE crops, which has already caused several billion dollars in damage to growers.

Hawaiian Governor Loses Primary by Wide Margin; Senate Race Is Undecided

After nearly four decades in elected office in Hawaii, Gov. Neil Abercrombie was dealt a stunning defeat in his bid for re-election, becoming the first governor in the state’s history to lose in a primary race.

Mr. Abercrombie, 76, a Democrat, was defeated Saturday by David Ige, 57, who began the campaign as a little-known state senator but capitalized on the governor’s sinking popularity.

The defeat will mark the end of Mr. Abercrombie’s long political career, which took him from the State Legislature, to Congress, to the governor’s residence. He collected only about 31 percent of the vote, compared with 66 percent for Mr. Ige.

Starnes: Aloha, Illegals!

The federal government is shipping “unaccompanied minors” to the Paradise of the Pacific.

Immigration attorneys in Hawaii tell me at least eight illegals have been dropped off in their state – and they’ve been told to expect more.

Webmaster's Commentary:

What are they thinking? We have 4000 homeless people here on Oahu and thousands more unable to find enough to eat, and the Federal Government is spending the money to fly illegals out here and drop them off?!?

Because it is an island, we have a high population density. People are crowded together which means those illegals carrying tuberculosis, HIV, H1N1, Scabies, and possibly Ebola represent a major threat to public health. Are they TRYING to start epidemics? Is Obama TRYING to crash the Hawaii economy, still fragile after years of TSA-reduced tourism?

If the Federal Government is going to spend that much money to fly the illegals out here, why not just fly them home? What the hell is going on here?

Storm Iselle shifts south.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Looks like hitting the heat and updrafts from the Big Island's volcanic region has indeed diverted the storm's path. The fact that this was not predicted even in last night's storm track supports the theory that the computer models do not take geothermal heat sources into account.

Tropical Pacific - Visible Loop

Webmaster's Commentary:

This is a flash-based animation of storm Iselle and Hurricane Julio approaching Hawaii and I think it illustrates something I mentioned in the top announcement. Note that as Iselle moves over the southern edge of the Big Island how it suddenly stops and intensifies. If you recall that the volcano system there has been in steady constant eruption for roughly 20 years you will understand that the south shore of the Big Island is quite hot and this extra heat energy creates huge updrafts which appear to be feeding the storm system while at the same time stalling and deflecting it. At this point it appears to me that this land-based source of heat and updraft is not included in the computer simulations used to predict where and when these storms are going.

Iselle May Strike Big Island of Hawaii as First Hurricane on Record

Hurricane Iselle is rapidly approaching Hawaii and will bring a high risk of heavy rain, damaging winds and rough seas to the southern part of the island chain, namely the Big Island.

A second hurricane, Julio, also bears watching.

If Iselle makes landfall on the Big Island of Hawaii as a hurricane, it would be the first hurricane ever to do so since records began in 1950.

AccuWeather meteorologists expect Iselle to make landfall over the Big Island (Hawaii) late Thursday evening, local time, with sustained winds between 70 and 80 mph and higher gusts.

Hawaii Braces For Hurricane Iselle, Hurricane Julio Up Next

Hawaii braced for its first direct hurricane hit in 22 years Thursday as Iselle headed toward the Big Island with a second storm on its tails. Bottled water and supplies were in high demand at stores ahead of the Category 1 storm’s expected impact on Thursday night. “It’s a fairly potent hurricane by Hawaiian standards,” Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth said. Heavy rains totaling 5 to 8 inches, winds gusting up to 80 mph and flooding were expected, before Iselle was set to weaken to a tropical storm by the time it hit Honolulu at about 9 a.m. local time (3 p.m. ET) on Friday. Tropical storm warnings were issued for Oahu, Kauai and Maui, and a flash flood warning was in effect for the entire island chain.

Iselle to Impact Hawaii With Rain, Wind and Rough Seas

Hurricane Iselle will weaken before reaching Hawaii later this week, but heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas will affect the islands. A second hurricane, Julio, also bears watching.

AccuWeather meteorologists expect Iselle to continue to weaken over the next couple of days and become a tropical storm before reaching the islands. Iselle will be moving into a wedge of cool water and dry air just east of the Hawaiian Islands.

However, even as a tropical storm, Iselle will still pack a punch. Heavy rain, gusty winds and building seas and surf will affect the islands during the second half of the week.

Hawaii keeps a watchful eye on Hurricane Iselle, maintains category 3 status

Iselle has changed little in organization during the past six hours. The eye remains well defined, with cloud tops to -70C occurring in the eyewall. Analyses from the SHIPS model and from CIMSS at the University of Wisconsin indicate 15-20 kt of southwesterly vertical wind shear over the system. However, this has not yet disrupted the inner core. The initial intensity remains 110 kt based on a combination of subjective and objective satellite intensity estimates. An Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate Iselle near 06/0600Z, which will provide ground truth for the intensity.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Worse, there is a second storm, Tropical Storm Julio, forming up behind it.

No doubt the carbonazis will claim that this proves the world is warming, but heat does not cause storms. A temperature differential causes storms, and one can get massive hurricanes by upper atmosphere cooling as much as by ground heating. The proof is seen on the storms on the gas giant planets in our solar system, which have storms the size of our entire world yet are hundreds of degrees colder.

Hawaii mayoral candidate tased after police chase (VIDEO)

Beau Hawkes isn’t the only contender in the upcoming Maui County, Hawaii mayoral race, or even the only one to be arrested in recent weeks. Currently, however, Hawkes is the only hopeful that can say he was tasered while trying to run from the cops.

Following an electrifying encounter with local law enforcement last Wednesday that ended with Hawkes being charged with resisting arrest and failing to obey an officer, the 34-year-old surfer candidate is free on $300 bail and says he is “absolutely” still running for office.

Furthermore, the potential future mayor of Maui says he’s going to sue the police department over his latest run in with the law and, once elected, will order cops to discontinue using their stun guns.

“Tasers are a violation of our human rights,” the mayoral hopeful told KITV News this week. “Maui Police Department will be the first police department to ban the user of Tasers.”

Hanabusa Votes to Limit Troops Deployments to Iraq - July 25, 2014

I am proud that the U.S. House of Representatives has again supported my position that we need to limit the way our nation approaches the situation in Iraq. It is our duty to preserve the role of Congress in determining America’s defense efforts and ensure that we act responsibly and with due concern for the men and women who have volunteered to defend our nation. Today’s vote, 370-40, together with the Hanabusa amendment, indicates a clear objection to the nearly 1,000 troops and combat assets that have been deployed in the region. I urge the Senate to take immediate action on both these measures.

Efforts to reach Hawaii's undocumented immigrants

While protests and demonstrations over illegal immigration take place across the mainland, in Hawaii a much quieter effort is underway to reach those hidden in our society and give some a chance at a normal life.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The "immigration reformers" pushing for amnesty for illegals are basically saying that everyone should leave the front door to their house open so that anyone who comes along may come in and take what they want. That is, of course, nonsense. Your house has a door so that you can choose who comes in. Nations have borders so that they can choose who comes in.

There are many illnesses now reported to be carried by the illegals pouring across the border. US Border Patrol agents are being infected with scabies. Two schools in California where illegals have been sent are now showing clusters of tuberculosis. Swine flu and AIDS have also been found in the immigrants. Worse, as of today, Bolivia, source for many of the illegals now entering the US, is reporting an outbreak of Bubonic Plague along the border with Peru (also a source for many illegals entering the US).

Those who seek to erase the immigration laws of the United States run the risk of turning the entire country into a Jim Jones style suicide cult!

We keep hearing that the illegals are fleeing oppressive government in their own lands. Why they would think life will be any better here is a mystery as the US now ranks 36th on the global freedom scale, pretty much at the bottom of all industrialized nations.

But let us look at history for how to deal with a repressive regime.

When the British discovered that King Charles 1 had hired Scottish troops to oppress the British people, the British didn't swim across the English Channel to France and say "Let us in! Let us in!" They arrested the King and cut off his head! Things got a lot better in their own nation after that!

When the French living under King Louise XVI realized their were being systematically looted by the French monarchy, they didn't swim across the English Channel to Britain and say "Let us in! Let us in!" They arrested the King and sent him and his money-junky friends to the guillotine! Things got a lot better in their own nation after that!

When the Italian people realized that Benito Mussolini had gotten them into a war on the side that was going to lose, the Italians didn't flock to the border of Austria and say "Let us in! Let us in!" They arrested Mussolini and shot him! Things got a lot better in their own nation after that!

When the Romanians lived under a repressive regime, they didn't flock to the border with Serbia and scream "Let us in! Let us in!" They took responsibility for the future of their nation, and machine-gunned Ceausescu live on Romanian National TV. Things got a lot better in their own nation after that!

We the people of the United States are not responsible to make the lives of Bolivians, Nicaraguans, Peruvians, Brazilians, etc. better. We have plenty of our own problems. Our current government doesn't even want to take care of Oahu's homeless and hungry who are LEGAL citizens!

So, instead of flocking to our borders and screaming "Let us in! Let us in", maybe you need to man-up, show some courage, and fix your own problems.

Held biannually by Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) is a multinational maritime exercise that takes place in and around the Hawaiian Islands. RIMPAC 2014 is the 24th exercise in the series, scheduled from June 26 to August 1.

RIMPAC is a valuable training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safe transit of sea lanes and security on the world’s oceans.

Twenty-two nations, 49 surface ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel will participate. Representatives from Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, the People’s Republic of China, Peru, the Republic of Korea, the Republic of the Philippines, Singapore, Tonga, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I have a ring-side seat, and expect the US Navy will put on a pretty good fireworks show for July 4th, to show off a bit!

A lot of people are wondering why China is involved this year given the strained relations between China and many of the other nations taking part in RIMPAC, especially the United States.

I can't help but think about Tom Clancy's book, "Debt of Honor", in which Japan initiates open warfare against the United States in the middle of a joint training exercise by "accidentally" crippling two aircraft carriers and killing two 688 fast attack subs.

Now I really do not think China is stupid enough to attack the rest of the RIMPAC participants, but we also know that the US Government is desperate to revive the war agenda, and China, or to be more accurate, the Yuan, is on the US Government's Special High Interest Targets list right now. So RIMPAC presents an opportunity for the US to sink some RIMPAC ships and claim it is a Chinese sneak attack.

All of a sudden, having a ring-side seat isn't sound so good!

“If a thorough examination of these apparent abuses truly paints the picture as it seems, the implications are staggering,” Bynum wrote May 28. “There may be millions in unpaid tax liabilities.”

Images of Hawaii - Early 20th Century - CAPTIONS UPDATED!

After a long delay in the postal system, these photos finally arrived, sent in by a reader. These are photos taken by a US Army soldier stations here in Hawaii at the close of WW1. His name is thought to be Edward Braza (or possibly Edward's father, first name unknown). He appears in many of the photos. From the multiple sizes of negatives and the attempts at hand tinting some photos, it is clear that Mr. Braza was a serious amateur photographer and captured many scenes of Hawaii as it was nearly 100 years ago.
