“A New Chapter”: After Half a Century, U.S. and Cuba Unveil Reopening of Embassies & Restored Ties

After half a century, the United States and Cuba have announced they will reopen embassies in each other’s capitals and formally re-establish diplomatic relations. Secretary of State John Kerry said he will travel to Havana to open the U.S. Embassy there. In a statement, the Cuban government said relations with the United States cannot be considered normalized until trade sanctions are lifted, the naval base at Guantánamo Bay is returned, and U.S.-backed programs aimed at "subversion and internal destabilization" are halted. But in a letter to Obama on Wednesday, Cuban President Raúl Castro acknowledged much progress has already been made, and confirmed the openings of permanent diplomatic missions later this month. We are joined by Peter Kornbluh, author of "Back Channel to Cuba: The Hidden History of Negotiations Between Washington and Havana."

Tory policies force Britain's poorest families to suffer the most

A newly released report has revealed, as many have suspected, that British taxes are currently weighted in such a way that hits the poorest families harder than the richest ones. With the Tories considering tax cuts for the rich, and reducing benefits plus tax credits for the poor that situation could get worse instead of better.

The Superpower Conundrum: The Rise and Fall of Just About Everything

The rise and fall of great powers and their imperial domains has been a central fact of history for centuries. It’s been a sensible, repeatedly validated framework for thinking about the fate of the planet. So it’s hardly surprising, when faced with a country once regularly labeled the “sole superpower,” “the last superpower,” or even the global “hyperpower” and now, curiously, called nothing whatsoever, that the “decline” question should come up. Is the U.S. or isn’t it? Might it or might it not now be on the downhill side of imperial greatness?

British Government Strike Law Most ‘Oppressive In The Developed World’

British trade union laws are the most restrictive in the developed world. This is a legacy of the Thatcher years, with legislation passed between 1979 and 1997, which made it harder for unions to gain recognition and raised the bar for ballots on strike action, requiring 40 percent turnout, making it much harder for unions to go on strike.

Federal judge erases Maui voters, bows to Monsanto

Federal Judge Susan Oki Mollway just told Maui voters: you’re canceled.

Last November, Maui County passed a ballot measure that would put a stop to all local Monsanto/Dow GMO experiments, until an independent investigation could assess the harm to health.

Promptly, Monsanto and Dow sued, the result of the vote was put on hold and never enforced…and now, all these months later, the ruling has come down.

Judge Mollway decided that state and federal laws governing agriculture trump county laws.

In other words, the people have no voice.

The State Department on Wednesday conceded that two dozen of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s emails did contain classified information, a fact that could trigger a U.S. policy that authorizes the government to take control of her private server and sanitize the contents.

A former senior intelligence official told The Washington Times the policy also requires the government to check other Internet paths her secret information could have taken.

Feminists upset over statue of man and woman talking

Scene: You're a woman, sitting on a bench reading a book. Your male friend sees you on the quad and comes over to say hello and talk. You put down your book, lean back against the bench and smile. He doesn't sit next to you; instead, he puts his foot on the bench and leans over his knee.

So sexist, right?

That scene is depicted in a statue at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas, and despite no sign of distress or physical assertion, some women have decided it is a statue of "mansplaining" — a term used to describe men condescendingly explaining something to a woman.

Seriously. Here's the actual statue and the claim of misogyny:

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hillary is counting on the "Vagina Vote" (her campaign's own term for it, so stop the hate emails) to win next year, and is trying to revive the militant male-bash feminism of the 1990s to push it through. But voters of my age remember how there never really was a rape crisis, and that women are not the helpless victims the feminists made them out to be (in the name of empowerment), so something new was needed. The good news; the opening salvo in Hillary's feminist gambit just looks plain silly!

Survey: Over a Third of Americans Would Like to Expatriate

It’s been found that year after year, more Americans are leaving the United States and renouncing their citizenship. It’s a trend that, while small, has been seeing explosive growth. Just a few years ago only a couple of hundred Americans took that course of action. But last year, a record 3,415 Americans said goodbye to their citizenship.

Of course, that number is just a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of the population. However, moving to a new country is often a tedious an expensive process. If it were easier, how many people do you think would be willing to leave this country? A new survey conducted by the peer-to-peer money transfer service known as TransferWise, asked that question to 2000 American residents and citizens. They found that 35% of them would consider leaving the good old US of A.

TSA Seizes $75,000 in Cash from Traveler, Tweets Picture of It, But Probably Won’t Give It Back

The gestapo continues to steal everything from us, including our money. Instead of “cops and robbers,” here’s a case of cops or robbers, because I can’t tell who is who here.

When a passenger simply tried to take a bag filled with $75,000 in cash onto a flight at Richmond International Airport, the TSA searched his “bulky” bag and found the money.

They quickly confiscated it.

The guy was not under suspicion for any real crime other than having that much cash on himself at an airport. Apparently just having large sums of cash these days automatically equals a crime that allows the government to steal from you?

Adding insult to theft injury, one of TSA’s spokespeople decided it would somehow make the agency look that much better to then Tweet a snarky photo of the guy’s money-filled bag.

Blumenthal's State Dept. role went far beyond Libya

New emails released by the State Department late Tuesday reveal a controversial aide played a much larger role in advising Hillary Clinton than the former secretary of state originally suggested.

Sidney Blumenthal, a Clinton confidante whose potential employment at the State Department was nixed by Obama administration officials, advised Clinton on the content of her speeches, on political developments in a number of countries and even on how her policies were playing in the international press.

The new records, all sent during Clinton's first year in office, indicate Blumenthal's advisory role went far beyond the informal intelligence memos he prepared for her about Libya. In fact, the emails suggest Blumenthal performed the duties of a full-time State Department staffer, despite being on the payroll of the Clinton Foundation during the same time period.

Donald Trump has some enthusiastic new admirers: White supremacists

While announcing his 2016 run for the presidency two weeks ago, billionaire and reality television mogul Donald Trump took the moment to say immigrants from Mexico are rapists and drug runners, While rejected by many, white supremacists say he’s speaking their language, according to Vocativ.

After a firestorm of criticism that saw his television shows – including Celebrity Apprentice and Miss America pageant – cancelled on NBC and Univision, he doubled down on the comments yesterday, calling them “totally accurate,” according to MSNBC.

And now he has some new fans.

“I do not believe he would solve all or even most of the problems we are facing, but he is absolutely the only candidate who is even talking about anything at all that matters,” gushed Andrew Anglin, blogger for the neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer. Trump is “willing to call them out as criminal rapists, murderers and drug dealers.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yes, certain Neo-Nazis may love Trump.

However, please don't discount the reality that there are enough thoroughly wounded Republican and Independents out there who would vote for him.

He panders to their most base, worse fears and concerns about EVERY immigrant, legal or illegal.

Democrats are betting that the amnesty issue will win scores of elections for them, both in state and national battles; however, they are forgetting one thing; many Latino immigrants have very conservative and church-centric values, and may be very uncomfortable with some issues in the Democratic platform, like abortion rights.

But what he did not choose to bring up is the reality that BOTH parties encourage illegal immigration, because the corporations which fund them love how illegal immigration brings down the cost of doing business.

Are there Mexican immigrants who rape and run drugs?!?

Yes, just like there are people of every ethnicity who do these abysmal acts.

But tarring all Mexicans and Latinos with a single brush, when the many of them have worked damn hard to graduate from college, find a good profession, and achieve the American dream, was one of the most ham-fistedly, pig-headedly stupid things the man could have possibly said, and this is why this man is unfit to be American's next President.

All Latinos who can vote in the 2016 election, please make your voices heard, both at the Conventions, and at the election.

Let us all work together to create a country of the people,by the people, and for the people, for all of us!!

And that means fixing what is broken, in a logical, intelligent way, working together.

U.S. Congress considers mandating vaccinations for all school children

Your God-given right as a parent to choose the best and safest medical interventions for your children is under attack by a Democratic congresswoman from Florida. Representative Frederica S. California Is Now the Perfect Test Lab for Vaccine Laws

This morning, Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law that will ban the use of religious and personal belief exemptions—ways that parents can opt out of certain vaccines for their kids before attending public or private school. California now joins only two other states, Mississippi and West Virginia, that have no exemptions in place (though students can still opt out if a doctor says they shouldn’t get vaccinated for medical reasons). The hotly-contested law was passed in the hopes that increased vaccination rates will help stave off the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases like the measles, which broke out earlier this year in a cluster that started in Anaheim’s Disneyland.

Webmaster's Commentary:

No, this bill was signed to increase the profits of the big pharmaceutical corporations.

As Iran nuclear deadline passes, narrative battle heats up

The real issue holding things up is whether the Americans have the "political will" to make that leap, to agree in writing to its obligations (without 100 caveats) and the courage to face their sprawling bureaucracy whose bread-and-butter is the 'sanctions industry' and the 'Iranian enemy.' says Sharmine Narwani

It’s D-Day in Vienna, and the parties sitting across the negotiating table still haven’t ironed out terms to settle a 12-year standoff over Iran’s nuclear program. Expect this deadline to be missed. And prepare for a lot of hot air to fill its space.

The “hot air” is calculated narrative-spin from a range of players that seek to 1) scuttle a deal, 2) increase pressure/create leverage at the negotiating table, or 3) frame an upcoming agreement in language favorable to one side.

Why the UK is No Longer Shocked at Establishment Sex Abuse Cover Ups

Greece – A Moving Target

Mr. Tsipras lets it be known that if the Greek vote ‘yes’ – for the austerity program, he may resign – that might bring the hegemon’s desired ‘regime change’.

Greece is a moving target. A new bail-out package in the wings? Being negotiated as these lines are going to print? An act of desperation? – Confusing for sure – for the electorate, for observers – but especially for the suffering every-day Greek. Almost hour by hour things are changing.

A last-minute, last ditch negotiation with Brussels for a new bail-out program has apparently been initiated by Athens for two years. No amount has been mentioned – let alone the austerities that Greece would have to accept – or the troika.

The Care and Feeding of a Financial Black Hole

Do you like your black hole? If you aren't sure you like it, then let me ask you some other questions: Do you like the fact that your credit cards still work, or that you can still keep money in the bank and even get cash out of an ATM, or that you are either receiving or hope to eventually receive a pension? Do you like the fact that you can get useful things—food, gas, airline tickets—for mere pieces of paper with pictures of dead white men on them? Do you like the fact that you have internet access, that the lights are on, and that there is water on tap? Well, if you like these things, then you must also like the financial black hole, because that's what's making all of these things possible in spite of your country being bankrupt. Perhaps it's a love-hate relationship: you love being able to pretend that everything is still OK even though you know it isn't, and you wish to enjoy a bit more of the business-as-usual before it all goes to hell, be it for a few more days or another year or two; but you hate the fact that eventually the black hole will suck you in, after which point things will definitely... suck.

Turkey Plans To Invade Syria

By Brandon Turbeville

Even worrying members of his own government, Turkish President Recep Erdogan is showing the world just how he earned his being shown the door in the last election. This is because Erdogan has recently announced plans to invade Syria, occupy a swath of land on the southern Turkey/Norther Syria border, and establish a buffer zone there...

This recent announcement involves the commitment of Turkish Air Force and infantry which will then be used to not only establish a “buffer zone” in Northern Syria but also to occupy that zone...

Protest Is the New Terror: How US Law Enforcement Is Working to Criminalize Dissent

It's well established that the FBI surveilled civil rights and other activists from Martin Luther King Jr. to leaders of the National Lawyers Guild as part of its wide ranging COINTELPRO (counter intelligence program) during the 1960s and early 70s. The use of planted news stories, faked communications to create dissension within activist groups, informants to make dubious cases and even assassinations was revealed by a group of activists called the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI, who broke into a bureau office in Media, Pennsylvania, in 1971 and found ample evidence of the agency's misdeeds. This is generally seen as an era of terrible government overreach in the name of fighting "communism."

France bans the sale of glyphosate

France is the latest country to ban the private sale of Monsanto’s favorite carcinogen – glyphosate. France has been in the alternative news quite a bit lately, asking the makers of Nutella to stop using palm oil, insisting all new rooftops be covered in solar panels or plants, and mandating the donation of all supermarket food waste. This new move by their Ecology Minister is the latest result of their forward thinking.

Global Governance ... Into the Future

Global governance is failing when we need it most. The paradox of our times is that, as global problems become more complex and threatening, our global institutions lose their force as organizing frameworks for inter-state cooperation. Starting from the Lorenzetti’s painting “The Allegory of the Good and the Bad Government”, David Held, Master of University College, Durham and Professor of Politics and International Relations at Durham University, explains what are the reasons for such gridlocks.

Despite claims the administration was caught off guard, the White House and four Cabinet departments predicted last year’s surge of at least 60,000 illegal juveniles over the U.S.-Mexico border and expect it to more than double to 127,000 this year, according to an internal document.

‘New demands on Iran – deliberate stumbling blocks’

All sort of things in these negotiations are going on behind the scenes, not only between the P5+1 and Iran but between the Western allies as well.

Additional demands on Iran at the nuclear talks put forward by France are basically impossible to fulfill; it’s unlikely that they were made without the full knowledge and approval of the US, says political commentator Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich.

IMF and USA set to ruin Ghana

Just ten years ago, Ghana had the most reliable electricity supply in all of Africa and the highest percentage of households connected to the grid in all of Africa – including South Africa. The Volta River Authority, the power producer and distributor was, in my very considerable experience, the best run and most efficient public utility in all of Africa. Indeed it was truly world class, and Ghana was proud of it.

Obviously the sight of truly successful public owned and run enterprise was too much of a threat to the neo-liberal ideologues of the IMF and World Bank. When Ghana needed some temporary financial assistance (against a generally healthy background) the IMF insisted that VRA be broken up. Right wing neoliberal dogma was applied to the Ghanaian electricity market. Electricity was separated between production and distribution, and private sector Independent Power Producers introduced.

The result is disaster.

Test Pilot Admits the F-35 Can’t Dogfight

A test pilot has some very, very bad news about the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The pricey new stealth jet can’t turn or climb fast enough to hit an enemy plane during a dogfight or to dodge the enemy’s own gunfire, the pilot reported following a day of mock air battles back in January.

“The F-35 was at a distinct energy disadvantage,” the unnamed pilot wrote in a scathing five-page brief that War Is Boring has obtained. The brief is unclassified but is labeled “for official use only.”

The test pilot’s report is the latest evidence of fundamental problems with the design of the F-35?—?which, at a total program cost of more than a trillion dollars, is history’s most expensive weapon.

Letter signed by 22 senators urges Obama to support Israel

Nearly one-quarter of the U.S. Senate signed on to a bipartisan letter urging President Barack Obama to support Israel around the world.

Twenty-two senators signed the letter, which was written “in response to your welcomed recent remarks at Congregation Adas Israel” on May 22 concerning his commitment to Israel’s security. The letter was sponsored by Sens. Mike Rounds, R-S.D., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y.

While welcoming Obama’s “unwavering commitment” to Israel’s security, the signers also want the Obama administration to remain committed to the United States’ “long-standing policy” of negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians as the way to peace.

The letter specifically asked the administration to oppose Palestinian efforts for membership in the United Nations and other international bodies.

Webmaster's Commentary:

How nice that everything is running so well in our country that those Senators have nothing better to do than worry about Israel and Palestine, and work towards peace by blocking Palestinian statehood wherever they can!

Dear Senators, if you love Israel that much, kindly move there and vacate your office for someone concerned with America and Americans!

Jewish Lord Faces British Child Sex Charges

British prosecutors said on Monday an aging Jewish member of the House of Lords would now face criminal action over accusations of serious historical child sex crimes after they overturned an earlier decision following anger from alleged victims.

Lord Greville Janner, 86, a former Labour member of parliament and ex-president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, is accused of more than 20 offenses on former residents of children’s homes in the 1970s and 1980s.

In April, Alison Saunders, Britain’s Director of Public Prosecutions said there was evidence to bring charges against Janner, who has always denied any wrongdoing, over 16 allegations of indecent assaults and six other counts.

But she said he was not fit to plead or give evidence because he was suffering from severe dementia and so a trial could not take place.

Greece’s Downfall and Redemption

What the Greek people can turn to is a realistic and altogether more democratic and humane option – of demanding their country slash its monstrous military spend.

Decades of exorbitant military spending account for Greece’s present downfall under an Olympian-sized debt. European governments and news media portray the problem of Greece’s financial woes as public spending profligacy.

Big money: pump and dump as a way of life

By Jon Rappoport

Let’s start with the analogy of the stock market. To boil it down, here is how the game is played by insiders:

They acquire many, many shares of a stock and then they push the price up, up, up, and then they create a top, crash it, sending the stock price off a cliff to a dismal bottom.

They profit greatly on the way up (pump), and then, selling short (dump), they pile up more profits on the way down.

Getting away with it is like having a license to print money...

Gary Hart: America’s Founding Principles Are in Danger of Corruption

Four qualities have distinguished republican government from ancient Athens forward: the sovereignty of the people; a sense of the common good; government dedicated to the commonwealth; and resistance to corruption. Measured against the standards established for republics from ancient times, the American Republic is massively corrupt.

What brought us to this? A sinister system combining staggering campaign costs, political contributions, political action committees, special interest payments for access, and, most of all, the rise of the lobbying class.

Worst of all, the army of lobbyists that started relatively small in the mid-twentieth century has now grown to big battalions of law firms and lobbying firms of the right, left, and an amalgam of both. And that gargantuan, if not reptilian, industry now takes on board former members of the House and the Senate and their personal and committee staffs. And they are all getting fabulously rich.

A college balks at Hillary Clinton’s fee, so books Chelsea for $65,000 instead

When the University of Missouri at Kansas City was looking for a celebrity speaker to headline its gala luncheon marking the opening of a women’s hall of fame, one name came to mind: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

But when the former secretary of state’s representatives quoted a fee of $275,000, officials at the public university balked. “Yikes!” one e-mailed another.

So the school turned to the next best option: her daughter, Chelsea.
