"The Defense Authorization Act [2007] gives the Executive the power to move National Guard units anywhere in the country, without regard for the wishes of the state governors, and to declare martial law. This declaration would authorize the detention of dissenting citizens who could then be picked up and held incommunicado for an indefinite period, without access to counsel or the courts. This is nothing short of a militarization of the Republic.

Enabled by the Defense Authorization Act, the president can now declare martial law, transfer military technology to militarized domestic police forces, and detain dissenting citizens virtually at will. These detainees could be held in camps that are now being constructed and refurbished by Kellogg Brown and Root, ostensibly for illegal immigrants.

... The unitary presidency has been granted the authority to order kidnapping, detention, and torture abroad under the Military Commissions Act of 2006. This act authorizes extraordinary rendition, which inevitably means foreign detention and torture of anyone the President determines to be an unlawful combatant." -- William F. Pepper in his book "An Act of State: the Execution of Martin Luther King"

New solar cell technology could massively increase the amount of energy that can be harvested from invisible light, scientists claim

Scientists in Australia and the United States turned low energy light into heavy energy light able to be captured by solar cells using 'oxygen' as a key ingredient.

Researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence in Exciton Science and UNSW Sydney found a way to 'upconvert' low, non-visible light to generate power.

The process will allow solar power arrays to generate more electricity from the same amount of sunlight as is currently used - making them more efficient.

Right now it is fairly inefficient and not really for commercial applications, according to Tim Schmidt, senior author on the paper, but they are working on improvements.

This overturns a previous theory that these 'volcanic structures' - first spotted through satellite observations of the planet - were long extinct.

Google Faces Backlash Over Claims It 'Deleted' Palestine From Maps

Over the weekend social media posts claiming that US tech giants Google and Apple "removed" Palestine from their map applications went viral.

The posts were somewhat misleading, notably one which garnered over a million "likes" on Instagram, given it appears Palestine had never been labeled on the searchable maps in the first place.

Yet it still unleashed a storm of controversy, leading to Palestinian leaders calling for a boycott of Google among their population, and the Palestinian Authority (PA) declaring it would look for an "alternative".

Never Before Has So Much Stimulus Been Injected In The Economy In A Single Quarter

Back-to-back strong monthly gains in retail sales in May and June and a powerful rebound in the equity markets in Q2 create the impression the recession is over. But the recessionary environment is only delayed, hidden by the record amount of fiscal and monetary stimulus that has postponed layoffs, spending cutbacks, bankruptcies, and business failures and operating losses.

The pandemic crisis is unique in that it involves public health, finance, and economics. An all-out policy package of fiscal and monetary stimulus helped finance recover and the economy to rebound. However, a pandemic-driven recession runs on its own timeline and is unaffected by the scale of stimulus. The new wave of COVID cases could quickly trigger a shift in investor sentiment from optimism to pessimism as the rebound in corporate earnings is postponed.

Trump Hints More Cities May Face Portland-Style Crackdowns

Federal crackdowns in Portland, Oregon have become an increasingly controversial situation. Last week, a DHS memo discussed needs if this is to become normal. There are worrying signs that this is being considered.

Though President Trump made no announcement one way or another on future crackdowns, he did praise what is going on in Portland, saying they “grab a lot of people and jail the leaders. These are anarchists.” But is this a one-off incident?

Trump rattled off a list of cities that could be next for the feds, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Baltimore, and Oakland. Local officials are already bristling at this, and as with Portland, the administration would face a backlash if they try to spread this.

Israeli Missiles Hit Several Sites in Damascus, Wounding Seven

At least six missiles were reported to have hit targets in the southern part of Syria’s capital city of Damascus, according to state media. The strikes targeted Shi’ite militia facilities, wounding at least seven people.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that the strikes targeted “pro-Iranian” sites, as is generally the case when Israel attacks Syria. Unlike most cases, Syria did not appear to claim substantial interceptions.

Though Israeli officials rarely comment on specific strikes, they have presented attacks on Iranian targets in Syria as trying to chase Iran out of the country. In attacking Iran, Israel avoids this being specifically about them attacking Syria.

In recent weeks, reports are that Israel’s attacks on Iran are being done specifically to try to start a war before the November US election. The expectation is that Iran will eventually retaliate and that this will be a pretext to further escalate the situation into open warfare.

Egypt Authorizes Sending Troops to Libya, Risking Clash With Turkey

On Monday, Egypt’s parliament gave military junta leader Abdel Fattah el-Sisi approval to deploy troops abroad into neighboring Libya, following up a similar authorization from Libya’s Tobruk parliament, which is loyal to Gen. Khalifa Hafter and is seeking an intervention on their behalf.

This is the latest of Hafter’s several multi-year bids to take over Libya. A military dictatorship themselves, the Sisi junta has backed Hafter heavily, seeing it as a chance to install a friendly government on their border.

Egyptian airstrikes are common, but a direct ground invasion is hugely risky, because Turkey already has troops in Libya, and they are backing the alternative government in Tripoli. This looks tailor-made to be a proxy battle over Libya.

Egypt and Turkey have ideological differences, not just that Egypt is under military rule after a coup while Turkey’s coup failed. The two both have interests in the future of Libya, Turkey for the sake of oil and gas exploration.

NATO Black Sea exercise kicks off as Moscow puts its regional forces on alert

The U.S. warship Porter entered the Black Sea on Sunday to take part in an annual NATO exercise, days after Russia placed its Black Sea forces on alert.

Sea Breeze 2020 is cohosted by the United States and Ukraine and involves more than 2,000 personnel from Bulgaria, Georgia, Norway, Romania, Spain and Turkey.

It will run through July 26 and focus on warfare areas such as air defense, anti-sub warfare, damage control and search and rescue, according to a Navy release.

A Navy P-8A Poseidon sub hunter aircraft is also participating.

The exercise will take place exclusively at sea to help mitigate COVID-19, according to the release.

South China Sea: beware of US ‘sabotage’, Beijing warns Southeast Asia

China’s Ambassador to the Philippines has urged Southeast Asian countries to be on guard against US attempts to “sabotage” the region’s stability by inserting itself into the South China Sea disputes.

The comments by Huang Xilian follow a hardening of Washington’s position on China’s claims in the sea and come after an op-ed in which his American counterpart, Sung Kim, declared Washington’s support for Manila in the “West Philippines Sea”. This is the term Manila uses to refer to the portion of the South China Sea it claims as part of its exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and includes areas claimed by Beijing.

US Deploys B-1B Bombers to Guam

US bombers in Guam have tended to be used to threaten North Korea, and a new deployment this week sees a pair of B-1B Lancer bombers arriving in Guam, after a brief stop-off in Japan to participate in a joint exercise.

Though such bombers tend to be used for operations near North Korean airspace, officials are also emphasizing the US tensions with China in the South China Sea. It’s hard to imagine that, with China’s substantial air defenses, these deployments would be likely to see use against them.

The South China Sea, however, seems like it’s going to be an ongoing issue, as the US insists that they will never accept Chinese claims on islands in the area. The Chinese, however, show no interest in giving up on any of those claims either.

The deployment of these bombers comes as the US has sent more forces into the area, with two carrier strike groups currently in the South China Sea.

‘U.S. is pressing the accelerator to trash’ relations, China says

War and the environment:The disturbing and under-researched legacy of depleted uranium weapons

While on a research trip to the Iraqi city of Basra in 1996, environmental engineer Souad Al-Azzawi encountered a mother taking care of three young children, all of them sick and unable to move on their own. With no idea why her children were ill, the mother hoped Al-Azzawi had come to help her family. Unfortunately, there was little Al-Azzawi—or anyone else—could do.

As the director of the doctoral program in environmental engineering at the University of Baghdad, Al-Azzawi had been researching radioactive contamination in Basra for years. She would go on to publish studies showing that cases of leukemia in children in Basra increased by 60 percent between 1990 and 1997, and that the number of children born with severe birth defects increased by a factor of three.

The JCPOA at 5: How the U.S. squandered an unprecedented diplomatic opening with Iran

The deal was never intended as a grand bargain. But by stopping the nuclear capability clock for a decade and a half, with intrusive inspections, it offered an off ramp, an ecosystem conducive to diplomacy and a stepping stone to a mutually brighter future.

President Trump’s impatience has proven costly. Iran has reduced its compliance with the nuclear deal and floats consideration of abandoning it altogether and the NPT as well.

If change is to take place, as much effort, persistence, financial resources, and patience should be devoted to diplomatic solutions as has been devoted to sanctions and pressure.

Webmaster's Commentary:

The reason President Trump did this, is that he can only see Iran, and its political and economic struggles, through the jaundiced perspective of Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu, who continually describes Iran as an "existential threat" to Israel, when the "threat" is primarily economic in nature, rather than existential.

Recently, Iran's Chief Rabbi, Yehuda Gerami, made the following statement:
"There is a big difference between Zionism and Judaism," says Rabbi who also hails former Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani as a "national hero."

Iran's chief rabbi: The Israeli government doesn't care about Judaism

The article goes on to state: "The chief rabbi of Iran's Jewish community, Yehuda Gerami, lambasted the Israeli government on Sunday, denied any connection between Judaism and Zionism and said there was "total freedom of religion" in Iran.

In a Hebrew-language interview with Al-Monitor, published Sunday and broadcast on Israel's Channel 12, Gerami denied that the conflict between Iran and Israel is a religious one and took aim at the Israeli government.

People tend to get confused, but there is a big difference between Zionism and Judaism. Judaism is a religion that is 3,300 years old, while Zionism is a national and political movement that is just 100 years old. As a country, the State of Israel has nothing to do with religion in general and Judaism in particular," he said.

"The Israeli government doesn't care about Judaism at all. Everything that they supposedly give to the Orthodox is because of some political deal or other, and not because of their religious approach," said Gerami."

What Netanyahu is trying to conjure, is for the US to confront Iran militarily, so that it's "the others of the earth" who get their hands dirty with yet another immoral, illegal war, with no basis in realty; in the 20th and 21st century, the US government has excelled in such wars..

But he is going to have to do this well before the elections, because, unfortunately, President Trump is just unhinged enough, and completely under Netanyahu's Svengali-like influence, to think he can justify such a war with the American people; he cannot, and I would like to hope that there is at least one "adult in the room" who can dissuade him from such an insane act, because such a war... will most probably mean a war with Russia as well.

Iran ‘Won’t Be Alone’ If U.S. Attacks, Russian Official Says

Time is very much running out for Netanyahu to get this to happen, as we are are at the end of July, and the election happens 3 November; unfortunately, however, with Netanyahu a politically wounded animal, facing massive corruption charges in Israel, one cannot tell of what he might be truly capable, to divert attention from this trial, and plunge the world, if he thinks this is "the only way out" of his trial woes.

House Votes to Block Funding for US Nuclear Test

In a 227-179 vote Monday, the House passed an amendment to the upcoming National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) specifically forbidding any spending to carry out a nuclear weapons test. President Trump is reportedly keen to conduct such a test.

The vote passed heavily on party lines, and will set up a fight to reconcile this NDAA with the Senate version, as the Senate’s version has an amendment from Sen. Cotton (R-AK) that sets aside $10 million specially to reduce the time required to conduct the test.

The US hasn’t conducted a test in decades, but President Trump sees a quick test as leverage to try to get his way on nuclear arms limitation talks, which have been stalled on US demands that China agree to participate.

A nuclear test is likely to fuel a strong international backlash, and provoke other nations to test. It will also make it difficult for the US to criticize other nations for their own nuclear development, when they are flagrantly ignoring international norms.

The Four Horsemen Of Disinflation: The Coming Rent-pocalypse

One month ago, we discussed "The Most Important Question In Finance Today", namely whether in the aftermath of the covid pandemic the world ends up with runaway inflation or price-crushing deflation. Today, Bank of America provides some additional perspective on what it calls the "inflation rollercoaster."

Separating the inflation stories

As BofA notes, the pandemic has created significant disinflationary shock to the US economy, with the latest CPI report showing core inflation running at a meager 1.2% yoy clip and core PCE later this month likely to come in at 1.1%. That said, it is important to note that current inflation readings are suggesting conditions are much worse than they actually are. Indeed, most of the deceleration can be attributed to a handful of idiosyncratic components. The underlying trend is stickier and has slowed more modestly.

Drone Wars Open New Phase Of Conflict In Syria

Early on July 20, positions of the Syrian Army came under shelling by militants in the villages of Furu, Bahsa and Beit Hassno in the southern part of the Idlib de-escalation zone. In response, government forces struck positions of Hayat Tahrir al-Sam near Kansafra and surrounding areas.

Local tensions increased just a few days after a key infrastructure object of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib became the target of a drone attack. On July 18, three suicide drones hit facilities of the Watad Petroleum Company in the town of Saramada. This company is controlled by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (formerly the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda) and has a monopoly on the fuel market in Greater Idlib. It is deeply involved in oil trafficking with nearby Turkish-occupied areas in northern Aleppo and responsible for the illegal import of fuel from Turkey. A notable part of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s revenue is generated by Watad.

Citadel Fined For Frontrunning Of Client Orders After Threatening To Sue Zerohedge

One month ago, shortly after our return to twitter from "permanent" banishment, when so much public attention had suddenly shifted to the retail daytrading platform Robinhood, we explained just how it is that Robinhood was so efficient at moving markets, and it had nothing to do with Robinhood or its small but dedicated army of 10-year-old daytrading fanatics. Instead, it had everything to do with various High Frequency Trading platforms buying up the retail orderflow that Robinhood was so generously packaging and reselling to the highest bidder, effectively giving HFTs a risk-free way of making pennies from every trade, which would then propagate like wildfire across various trading venues, massively accentuating every small move thanks to the momentum-ignition capabilities of HFT algos.

The Forgotten Conflict That Is Threatening Energy Markets

In the last week, the military conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia has reignited, with the two nations having already been engaged in a military confrontation for decades. Nagorno Karabach, an Armenian enclave inside of Azerbaijan, is one of the main underlying factors for the conflict, but the growing rivalry between Russia and Turkey is also playing a part. More than 16 soldiers have been killed in the most recent round of fighting. Both sides are accusing each other of aggression and military action. The use of full scale armed forces and drones have been involved, killing several soldiers on both sides and reportedly an Azerbaijani general. The current outbreak of fighting has been the deadliest since the “April War” of 2016. While most clashes normally occur in and around the Armenian controlled Nagorno-Karabakh region, the current clashes are on the international border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The international community is urging both sides to end the clashes.

The present scandal bears the earmarks of more than mismanagement. It looks like political collusion to influence the November election and far more.
