The Hebronisation of Jerusalem

The recent escalation of tensions in Jerusalem with clashes between Palestinian demonstrators and Israeli police in and around the Old City appear to signify the emergence of a disturbing new trend: the Hebronisation of Jerusalem. This presages not only the triumph of the radical settler groups in taking over culturally sensitive parts of the city, but also further violence and turmoil. More importantly it also interrupts the delicate moves towards the resumption of negotiations between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority/PLO.

IIlegal Israeli Settlement Expansions Continue

Currently, around 500,000 Jews reside illegally in over 120 West Bank and East Jerusalem settlements as well as dozens of outposts. Their numbers grow daily despite occasional pledges to curtail or slow them, the latest last November when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a 10 month freeze, calling it a move to "help launch meaningful negotiations to reach a historic peace agreement that would finally end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians."

US Media And Israel Military, All In The Family

Recent exposés revealing that Ethan Bronner, the New York Times Israel-Palestine bureau chief, has a son in the Israeli military have caused a storm of controversy that continues to swirl and generate further revelations.

Many people find such a sign of family partisanship in an editor covering a foreign conflict troubling especially given the Times’ record of Israel-centric journalism. Times management at first refused to confirm Bronner’s situation, then refused to comment on it. Finally, public outcry forced Times Public Editor Clark Hoyt to confront the problem in a February 7th column.

THE US HAS TO REPAIR A LONG HISTORY OF MISTRUST

In occupied Palestine, America has been enabling and empowering Israel — a state that has much in common with Nazi Germany — to kill us, destroy our homes, steal our land, and banish us from our ancestral land. Petraeus singles out Al-Qaeda threat in Yemen

"Saudi Arabia and the other peninsula countries have continued to make gains with the obvious exception of Yemen," Petraeus, the head of US Central Command, told NBC television's "Meet the Press" program.

Yemen is home to Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an offshoot branch of Osama bin Laden's terror network that claimed responsibility for the botched Christmas Day suicide bombing of a Detroit-bound passenger plane.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to General Petraeus:

1. the crotch bomber was a complete setup, courtesy of some US government agency intervention to get him on that plane with no passport.

2. The word "Al-Qaeda", in Arabic, means "the base." in colloquial Arabic, it means "the toilet". What self-respecting insurgency would ever name itself "the toilet"?!?

3. There is no actual proof that such an organization as "Al-Quaeda in the Arabian Peninsula" actually exists.

4. The real problem in Yemen is a despotic, dysfunctional government with absolutely no concern about the lives of its people. Poverty and corruption here are at some of the highest levels in the Middle East, and that is saying something.

5. Yet, the US continues to support Yemen's tinpot dictator , "President for Life" Saleh (just as we did with the Shah of Iran and Batista in Cuba).

6. Despotic regimes make insurgency look attractive to some, and the only possible option to others. When peaceful revolution is impossible, violent revolution is inevitable.

7. Not every geopolitical problem can be resolved at the point of a gun barrel or a drone attack. These are social, political, educational, and economic problems.

What's behind renewed war jitters in Israel, Lebanon?

Despite the jitters and the rhetoric from both sides of the border, neither Hezbollah nor Israel appear anxious to embark upon a new round of fighting. Analysts suggest that the spark for a new conflict could come from an incident along the border that flares out of control, such as a rocket attack into Israel. There have been seven isolated firings of short-range rockets into Israel since 2006, all of them suspected of being the work of either Al-Qaeda-affiliated factions or rogue Palestinian groups.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Current events markedly contradict the statement here that "...neither Hezbollah nor Israel appear anxious to embark upon a new round of fighting."

Israel has just done a series of military exercises very close to the Lebanese border recently, and continues illegal flights into Lebanese airspace; these are both very provocative moves.

If Israel attacks Lebanon, this time, they will go all the way to the Litani River, as they are desperate for the water.

Yemen clashes continue, ceasefire offer rejected

Yemen rejected a ceasefire offer from Shi'ite rebels on Sunday and said fighting was continuing, as neighbouring Saudi Arabia accused the insurgents of mounting sniper attacks inside its territory. The conflict with the northern rebels, who complain of social, religious and economic discrimination in the southern Arabian state, has rumbled on since 2004, but intensified last year and drew in oil-rich Saudi Arabia.

Robert Fisk: The tree-lined bunkers that could change the face of the Middle East

The newly resurfaced Lebanese roads near the border – courtesy of Hizbollah money – suggest that someone might want to move men at high speed towards the frontier. Perhaps even to cross the border.

Israeli army commanders are talking about this in the Israeli press. A fast, dramatic spring across the frontier to the west – in the direction of Naharia, perhaps, or a grab at the settlement of Kiryat Shmona – and Hizbollah would announce it had "liberated" part of historic "Palestine". Israel would have to bomb its own territory to get them out.

Pentagon to Send More Special Forces Troops to Yemen

The Pentagon is assigning more special forces personnel to Yemen as part of a broad push to speed the training of the country's counterterror forces in the wake of the failed Christmas Day attack on a crowded U.S. airliner.

Military officials familiar with the matter said the U.S. will begin rotating the same groups of special forces personnel through Yemen and keeping some of the elite troops there for longer tours, changes designed to help the American trainers develop closer relationships with their Yemeni counterparts.

The bogus "land swap" deal

Should the Palestinians agree to a land swap they would be undermining not only their rights but also any chance for peace. This is because Israel is likely to use the land swap to:

- Annex areas in the West Bank and carve off lands within or close to Jerusalem, along with land rich in ground water.

- Annex the so-called "large settlement areas", which were created originally as a means of dissecting the West Bank and deterring the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

Yemen near crisis that will pose global threat, foreign ministers warn

Yemen faces a crisis that would threaten global security, foreign ministers from across the world warned yesterday as they met in London to pledge support for the country’s battle with al-Qaeda.

Mrs Clinton warned that in a digital age, radicalisation could take place anywhere. “The question ‘Where?’ in the 21st century may be somewhat beside the point,” she said. “Increasingly, we are having to face whether it’s the UK, the US or Yemen, threats coming from beyond our borders that cannot be pinned on any place.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

Hilary Clinton has a magnificent job of asking the absolutely wrong questions.

The question about radicalization is infinitely less about "where", than why.

Unless and until Western powers grab the members of Selah's government collectively by a very sensitive portion of the human anatomy, and demand that corruption stop, strong> there can and will be no end to the radicalization going on here.

When people feel that they can get an education, work, earn decent wages, be comfortable, take care of their families, and that there is hope for their kids' futures, radicalization won't look attractive.

Unfortunately, every since Selah took power, the Yemeni government has presented just the opposite of the above-describe scenario to their people.

Very much as in Afghanistan, the answers here are not military; they are social, political, and economic.

The US, unfortunately, has not yet learned that there are some geopolitical problems which cannot be resolved with bombs and bullets.

US lends firepower to Yemen fight

U.S. and U.K. military personnel were not present, since they’re not allowed to be seen or photographed by the press to avoid drawing attention to their presence on the ground in Yemen, the Yemeni soldier said. His voice was muffled by a black nylon facemask. For his own safety, he said he did not want his identity revealed. He would not give his name or allow himself to be recorded on video.

The presence of Western military personnel in Yemen is “sensitive,” he said, gesturing with an unlit cigarette.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Yemeni governmental officials may think that they can limit US involvement in their fight against the insurgents.

But having American "advisors" training their soldiers is the proverbial camel's nose under the tent.

Unless there are meaningful cease-fires and negotiations to all the battles Yemen is fighting (including a secessionist movement), we are going to see a greatly expanded US military involvement here, whether the Yemeni government wants this or not.

The problems here will never be resolved through military action alone. They are economic, social, and political, in a country with extreme poverty and corruption.

You can't resolve those issues with bullets and bombs.

Yemen: Terrorist Haven or Chess Piece?

So is the current uproar over Yemen a case of a U.S. administration overreacting and stumbling into yet another quagmire in the Middle East? Or is this talk about a “global danger” just a smokescreen to allow the Americans to prop up the increasingly isolated and unpopular regime in Saudi Arabia?

Maybe both, but at least one respected analyst suggests that the game in play is considerably larger than the Arabian Peninsula and may have more to do with the control of the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea than with hunting down al-Qaeda in the Yemeni wilderness.

Israel Developing Semi-Lethal Sonic Cannon To Control Rioters

A desert people have developed a new weapon that uses sound instead of bullets. But this time, it will be used to control crowds instead of fighting giant worms or devious members of House Harkonnen.

The Israeli Defense Ministry has contracted for the production of sonic-boom stun-guns called "Thunder Generator cannons," which they hope to use in crowd-control situations.

Israel Is ‘More Hostile Than Ever’

Hostility toward local and international human rights groups operating in the Zionist entity mounted in 2009 because of their reports on Operation Cast Lead, Human Rights Watch charged in its annual world report, released Thursday.

“Local and international human rights groups working in Israel have experienced a more hostile climate than ever before after documenting abuses committed by Israel, as well as Hamas, during the December 2008-January 2009 fighting in Gaza and Israel in connection with Israel’s ongoing blockade of Gaza,” wrote HRW executive-director Kenneth Roth in his introduction to the 612-page report.

“Accepting Various Truths”

No one in the Obama administration is going to acknowledge that our foreign policy in the Middle East has alienated many Arabs.

The U.S. pro-Israel policy and our shocking neglect of the beleaguered Palestinians underlie almost every initiative or tactical tilt that comes out of Washington.President Obama and his predecessors in the White House have scored domestic political points by embracing this world view. This is one vantage point that is truly bipartisan, to the point where no one discusses it.

Michael Scheuer, a former CIA specialist on the al-Qaida terrorists, complained on C-SPAN recently that any debate about American support for Israel is “normally squelched.”

“For anyone to say our support for Israel doesn’t hurt us is to just defy reality,” he added.

Israel's Assassination Policy

In recent weeks Israel has escalated its practice of assassinations in the West Bank and Gaza. At the end of December, Israeli special forces broke into the Nablus homes of Anan Subih, Raed Surkaji, and Ghassan Abu Sharekh and killed them.

Official Israeli sources linked the three to the killing of Israeli settler Meir Avshalom Hai who was killed while driving to the illegal outpost in which he lived. The killings are the latest in Israel’s long-time practice of assassinations, illegal under international law. Many contradictory reports have surfaced over the December 26 assassinations. The Real News’ Lia Tarachansky spoke to the families of two of the killed.

After Stealing Palestinian Organs, Now It’s Haiti’s Turn

While media reports from Haiti expressed amazement at Israel’s well-equipped medical delegation to the quake-stricken nation, some critics have warned against organ theft. The Israeli medical team dispatched to Haiti has set up a field hospital in the tremor-battered Caribbean country, winning Western media praise for doing what even their American peers have not yet managed to accomplish.

“War on terror” as a cover for US terrorism

Paul J. Balles considers the USA’s use of the so-called “war on terror” as a cover for US state-sponsored terrorism against anyone who stands in the way of Washington’s global hegemonic ambitions or even questions US or Israeli policies.

Israeli MK: Obama Get's "Failing Grade" Over Middle East Policies

On the eve of a four-day visit to the United States, hawkish Likud MK Danny Danon on Monday launched a blistering assault on President Barack Obama's Middle East policies, declaring that he would give Obama "a failing grade" for his first year in office.

"I would give Obama an 'F' for serious lack of knowledge or understanding on topics related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," said Danon, speaking to The Jerusalem Post ahead of his US trip.

I Am The Resistance

It is our duty to remember and remind the world that the Palestinian freedom fighter is a man, a woman, like any other. He loves his family. She loves her country. They seek a better future. They are willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of justice and freedom. They waited for the world to lift the blatant injustice that has befallen them since 1948. They expected the world to understand when they took up arms to lift this injustice themselves.

Haiti Earthquake Hides the Cracks of Hypocrisy

This has been a quick response and all of those who have been helping, donating and providing assistance should be commended. The United States has been a big pusher of a lot of this, the US news media has basically become a 24 hour ad like the ones you see asking for donations to help the orphaned children. Israel has been a big medical supplier and it has not gone unnoticed by the media either.

But, what happened during these disasters?

Yemen: Toward Another US Quagmire

Like his predecessor, Obama is recklessly plunging into impoverished Yemen in a bid to shore up US strategic and economic interests in the Middle East. At this stage, the Pentagon has ruled out sending US troops. This reflects concerns that as well as the US military being overstretched by the neo-colonial occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, sending in ground forces would intensify opposition to President Saleh’s autocratic and widely detested rule.

Webmaster's Commentary:

One has to wonder, with military campaigns all over the Middle East, what the finite upper limit may be to how many contract mercenaries the US can hire before the US if forced to re-institute some kind of draft/national service policy.
